I am aware.
What some people will do to get in the papers or on the TV. 😉
Basically, don’t you think figuring out why there’s a fire is somewhat more important than whining about the fact that plastic burns?
Or how about, making sure they’re installed, maintained and cleaned correctly.

That’s the thing about fridges and fridge freezers, in that most of the above doesn’t apply. They’re just pushed into a corner and switched on and left. Those with a metal back less likely to ever catch fire (as demonstrated by the LFB).
What’s good about all this is that those concerned about the safety of white goods are actually doing something about it. It starts with a tragedy, then publicity and, eventually, legislation.
It shouldn’t have to be that way but that’s how it works. In the midst of all this is complacency, apathy and sheer bloody mindedness by those that could have prevented this in the first place. Coincidentally they are the same ones that are first to put the blame on the user.

Condensation is an issue. Build up of lint/fluff/dust. Spillage.
But the big one is ventilation, I’ve seen and I’m sure most that service refrigeration, multiple backs melted as some muppet hasn’t installed correctly and/or messed up the ventilation.
So, do not dismiss these reasons by any means as some I’ve seen, it’s a flamin’ miracle they didn’t go up.
What’ll happen, at best is, we’ll get a new standard (maybe with international agreement) on the backing material used. Probably after years of wrangling at huge cost, in millions, to the taxpayer. Maybe.
And, errr, that’s it.
Story ended, everyone can relax and go back to normal till the next tragedy or something else steals the spotlight in the interim and they can drop this as it’s no longer news.
So there’s absolutely no guarantee of a legislative change as, it needs to be international, Blighty can’t just make up it’s own rules when it comes to international standards, even out of the EU.
The publicity, oh yeah, wonderful that is… tell people that stuff’s gonna kill them and if something does happen after one of the guys has been it’s worse than it was before as they’ll be in the firing line automatically I expect. Easy targets tinted on their backs.
So yeah Martin, what a fantastic result for Joe Public and the trade, just glorious isn’t it?
Till you actually think about it and the consequences.
My opinion is that, if you think this is a good thing, you’re dreaming. If you think it’ll bring any meaningful change, you’re dreaming.
Tell you what, revisit this in 1, 3 and 5 years, see if I’m right or not. I’d even be prepared to wager that the net effect of this will be the sum of zero for anyone, if anything it’ll be a negative.
