KeymasterI have read the washer forums with great interest, and they confirm my beliefs that the German brands seem to be built best and give the least problems.
I may be looking to change my fridge in the near future. The current hotpoint 8596p is slowly falling apart, though it does still work for the moment. I would like something alot bigger, with more fridge space, and less freezer (we have a chest freezer).
So what is the common wisdom for fridge/freezers as far as brands go? I’m thinking to go for Bosch again, or maybe Liebherr – but i’m not fussed on brand – I just want quality. I read on the forums that Maytag manufacture the Bosch side-by-side american style fridges – is that true?
I’ll either go for an extra height fridge with small freezer space (Liebherr seem to make ones like this), or go for a side-by-side style fridge. Either way – i’d like to get something that is solid, and quality where the plastic bits don’t fall apart after a few years (like my Hotpoint has). I’ve seen some of the korean side-by-side units which are quite inexpensive, and they just look like a lump of cheap plastic to me.
Thanks for any input.

It depends on your budget to be honest, if you want something really good have a look at the Miele.
Apart from that, you’ve answered the question already in many ways, Bosch, Neff and Siemens are also good (all the same product essentially), Liebherr I’m not so sure on 😉
All in my opinion of course 🙂

What about Maytag? 🙂 I suppose my budget depends on what a good piece of equipment costs. If it is more than I can afford, i’ll save up for it. I see that Amana to 7000 quid built-in fridge freezers – that’s beyond my budget!

I think that you have to decide how long you want the fridge/freezer to last and what you want it to do.
Without doubt the German models will last longer, but cost more to repair if they go wrong. An italian made Whirlpool side by side is not a patch on the American made Whirlpool equivilents, but both have extorsionate spare part prices.
The cheaper end of the market can be good value over a period of 5 years. Try buying cheaper (Samsung) covering it with a 5 year warrenty that replaces the appliance if unrepairable, rather than impossing a depreciation into the equation.
***before you buy a side by side ensure it will fit through your doors, making sure that delivery and fitting includes removal of the doors and refitting if required***
