I’m using a B&Q 4.8 volt “Pro” cordless driver which is brilliant apart from one thing. After just 2 or 3 months the battery won’t last a full day any more and I have to recharge every night. Despite being sold as a “Pro” tool the guarantee small print claims it’s not designed for trade use!!

I will take it back and if they try anything I will advise that trading standards might have something to say about promoting a “Pro” range that’s not for “Pro’s”

Anyway, does anyone have any recommendations of really good professional cordless screwdrivers? I’m not keen on the ones that are like little drills, I prefer the smaller pistol-type but hey – if none of the smaller ones are up to the daily grind I’ll have to buy a bigger one.

I use a black and decker KC9036 (orange and black)with the handle that collapses to fit behind those awkward spaces (2 years). also use a B&D flexidrive for doing those awkward doorseal clamp bands.

I suppose it depends on the type of work you are doing. I find an 18 volt drill/driver is required for Zanussi drum screws but a smaller tool may be better for screwing on panels etc. At least with the bigger tools you often get a spare battery included.

Yes for those zanussi screws the makita drill has to come out!

I love my Makita drill! 😉

As well as the adaptor for the 7mm, 8mm, 10mm & 13mm bits plus extensions. Doing many a door seal was made very easy from a drill and a couple of bits and saved a few cuts and a lot of heartache.

18v? Rubbish – mines 24v, spare battery, 1 hour charger, rips everything apart! Odd thing is, it’s a Homebase own brand, well made, reliable, instruction sheet with a telephone number on it that works – Brill!

Oh, and you can back the torque off for screws. Mmm – nice.

Most of those you all refer to are only as good as the battery that powers them. In my experience, unless you get several spare batteries AND ensure you discharge them fully before recharging, they are duff after about 18 months use usually, 2 years at best.

New batteries is what I need now and NOT a new drill, no matter if they fall off a friggin’ lorry either??

I’ve bought a Black & Decker 12 volt one with adjustable angle. It’s a beast, and it zaps screws off twice as fast as the pathetic pistol-type 4.8V one I had before.

I have realised that (as Martin says) I need a spare battery. There’s nowt worse than the battery dying on you in the morning and having to use manual screwdrivers the rest of the day.

To be honest I cheat and have two Ixo’s, absolute brill. Small enough to get into small places and powrfull enough to do basic work. I do not need a larger tool!! OK maybe I do but not on a family sight.

Gigle, giggle, had to much wine tonight, weyyyyyy.

I can thoroughly recommend my Dewalt 12v job (the real proffessional tools made by Black and Decker)….comes with two batteries as standard, the ‘T’ shaped handle balances it perfectly, it’s given me years of faultless service (even the batteries), and best of all when it does eventually need repair then the dealers have to provide a loan replacement while they do the job so no ‘down time’ with it.
Incidentally, if you want to buy one then look out for their roadshow demos, they give silly discounts and throw in lots of goodies too…they almost paid me to have mine! 😆

I use the Bosch IXO (£24.99 from Homebase), it’s small and gets into all those little places. 3.6 volt with plenty of talk. I’m a Merloni engineer, and we all use them, great value, and very tough.
