while repairing dishwasher i got asked about this problem. i have never worked on one of the but suspect that they are eay to do. thing is diagnosing the fault. basicall it will not spin. when i tried to turn the drum in either direction i could barely move it. i wondered if something was stuck under the agitator(is that likely) but i couldn’t get it off. any advice would be appreciated although im tempted to refer her to local whirlpool guy.

Is it a Top Loader?

Assuming that it is a top loader then the drum has an automatic brake on it.
Does it agitate the central shaft during the wash cycle? if it does then it is probably the clutch and if it doesn’t then it will be the three piece coupling.

P.S. To remove the agitator you need to unclip the detergent dispenser off of it and look down the middle, there should be a plastic cap to remove which gives access to the bolt.

it was the three piece coupling. thank you very much guys. its really appreciated. also very simple job.
