ParticipantHi there, I had a heater fault indicated and traced it to an open circuit on the heating element. Although the element itself measured ~30 Ohms, one of the links at the end had failed. I assume this is a fusible overheat-protection safety device and must have blown from some sort of fault. So I am now in the market for a new heating element. While it is apart, I may also consider replacing the circulation pump as a future-proofing measure. The machine is into its 8th year and is used daily.
My question is about changes to the design and backwards compatibility. My DW has got the heating element integrated with the pump body whereas current replacements seem to comprise an inline conversion kit. Also, the new pumps I have found are not exactly the same as my old one but may or may not fit as they appear to have similar mountings etc.
Should I: stick with my old pump and buy a replacement heater from eBay in the old style (cheapest, get-you-going option); or buy a new pump and inline heater kit in the confidence that they will replace the old components? Is the inline heater better, and is that why they possibly changed it?
Any advice, part numbers, suppliers etc much appreciated.
Full model number is 851175615900.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Dave. Heating element ordered. I have decided to run with my old motor as there is nothing wrong with it that I can see, other than its age. Cheers, Mark.

OK, so the heating element has arrived. It is missing the sealing ring (no problem, can use old one) and instructions. Although it’s pretty obvious how it goes together so no great dramas, does it matter which way round the element goes? IE: should the terminal block on the heating element be at the end closest to the pump or otherwise? I’m guessing it doesn’t matter much, but want to get it spot-on as per the book. Cheers.

check the tubes sometimes there are notches in the end of the tube to go round things on the heater. if no then it does not matter apart from it needs to be in a position where the cables can get to it easily so the normally means connection close to motor

Good tip, thanks. There is a notch at the terminal end of the tube that engages with a small key in the housing. I therefore started in this configuration but later noticed an arrow printed on the side of the heater which I took to indicate direction of flow. As it was pointing back towards the sump, I reversed the heater and rotated it so that the wiring was in a good arrangement. Anyway, right or wrong it’s done and reinstalled now! It passed the system test and washes well.
