I have an upright freezer which I bought secondhand with no user manual. It has 4 buttons with lights at the top and some little symbols. I have no idea what they mean. An electronic display gives some kind of temperature reading but whether this is the current temp’, the optimum’ the minimum, I have no idea. The whirpool page is less than useless with no way of downloading a user manual as all their pdf files are corrupt and cannot open. I managed to open a German one but it made no reference to these 4 lights and buttons. Presently I have nothing in the freezer as twice it has defrosted itself and even when it was working, it would start to make an odd noise (some kind of alarm call?)and the red (warning?) light would flash. Does any idea what is going on? What are the buttons and lights for? WHat do I need to press in order for it just to work? I read a previous post abouit lights flashing and it ‘chattering’ where the solution was, apparently, to get the thing level. I checked mine and it is already perfectly level so that is not the answer.
    Help please.

    Hi Fenwoman,

Sorry you’ve waited for any response.

The buttons will select options such as fast freeze and lowering or raising the temperature I expect and do little else. The display will usually tell you the current temp internally and, when you press one of the buttons, flick to the set temp.

If it’s cutting out then there’s almost certainly a fault on either the control PCB, thermistors or the compressor itself.
