I have a couple of problems with this fridge/freezer at the moment:

    1. The icemaker is not working. The light shows ok when switched on the control panel. No water is getting to the icemaker tray. The water dispenser works ok but with a thumping sound.

    2. A week or so ago, the freezer alarm started going off and the fridge started to warm up. This could be reset by opening the freezer door and switching to standby then back on again.
I have emptied the fridge/freezer, switched off and allowed to defrost for 24 hours. The freezer worked ok for a day or so then the same thing started happening again. The “door open” reset works for a few hours then the alarm goes again, with — in the freezer temp display.

Any help would be much appreciated

More info in addition to the above:

The fridge is now not very cool, even though the temp display is set to minimum (2).
The freezer seems to be getting slowly warmer – going to have to transfer food to chest freezer in garage (again).
I can hear a fan kick on and off when both fridge/freezer doors are opened/closed.

Just tried the Whirlpool service number and callout charge is a bit steep, I think (£72-50), thats before any parts and labour costs are added.

    Any help much appreciated

The ice maker fault can be tricky to diagnose, faulty inlet valve, main pcb, icemaker, icemaker optics, frozen feed pipe, the list of possibilities goes on. The thump you hear when you stop dispensing water could be the inlet valve closing. The fan you hear kicking in when you close the doors is the one in the freezer blowing cold air into the fridge, as the freezer isn’t cooling down then the fridge isn’t going to either.
The — in the freezer display tells you that the temperature has risen above -13 deg c.
You will need an engineer to diagnose this one, could be the compressor or the electronics at fault.
Click on repairs@ on the left side of the page or post your post code here and someone will help you find an engineer.

    Re: Whirlpool American Fridge/Freezer problem(s)

Funnily enough we have just had exactly the same problem with our fridge/freezer same model. We paid for an engineer to be advised that this was a common problem with the model. First the flashing lights and resolving this by setting the freezer to standby. This was resloved by replacing the back circuit board. Our freezer is two and half years old, the new circuit boards don’t always work with the front board, so it may be necessary to fit both (we were lucky and only had to replace the back one). This service cost £161, which included the call out.

The ice maker not working if you are able to move the fingers that eject the ice from the tray into the ice bucket then you have a faulty mechanism. the only cure is a new unit which cost £110.00. We have since taken out insurance which cost £35.00 for 5 years may be worth giving this some consideration.

    Many thanks for the info.
Engineer is due on Monday so i’ll see what pans out when he has a look at it.
