Got a customer who tells me her Whirlpool American style side by side fridge freezer has stopped functioning. It seems to be running but two dashes appear in display and alarm is sounding. She says display still reads -18 and 5c as normal. It is not freezing and food seems to be defrosting. Does real temp’ not display? I suspect this is setpoints. I’m experienced at these brutes and only do thermostat changes on refrigeration.

If 2 dashes appear, then there cant be 18 on the display!?!
If it is defrosting, check there is power to the compressor, the Temp sensors rarely go wrong. It will more likely be the control board.Does it need a regas?
The 18 and 5 are what it is set to, wont flash temperature unless it is below -12 if I remember rightly.
Take the lback cover off in the freezer and check the back is fully frozen

She said its showing — two dashes and alarm sounding. When she resets alarm it will go for a while & show -18 and 5c. But will alarm again after a few hours.
I advised her to contact Whirlpool for repairs as i don’t do Refrig’ work, just fit the odd t’stat.
