Whirlpool ARC5553 Fridge freezer

I need to replace the thermostat on my Whirlpool ARC5553 fridge freezer. All of the information I have found on line simply says pull the capillary attached to the thermostat out from the clear plastic tube where it passes into the top of the appliance and into the freezer, and thread the new capillary into the tube.

I cannot get the old one out, it doesn’t move at all. Can anyone advise if the capillary tube is anchored somewhere inside the appliance such that I have to free the end before trying to pull out.

is the unit still working
if yes has it frozen in ?

unfortunately whirlpool tech manuals do not give this sort of info and all you can hope for is someone who has done this job and that’s not me. have done 1 or 2
fridges in my time ( don’t do a lot) that have a similar system and had no problems
