I would be extremely grateful if someone could help with the following problem:-
My 3 1/2 year old fridge/freezer fails to cut in when the temp rises in the fridge or freezer compartments. I can usually make it run for a few hours if I turn it off using the internal fridge temp control & then turn it back on. At first the fault was intermittent but now I’m having to restart the fridge/freezer every 4-5 hours.

It sounds like a thermostat problem but it could be other things.

Do you have the 12NC number off the rating plate of the fridge freezer? It should be inside the fridge.

Many thanks for the reply, there are two numbers inside the fridge compartment:-
    Model No. 850174515165
    Serial No. 360812015333
The fault appears to be intermittent again, this morning the compressor & fan were cutting in after a few hours, but they haven’t worked this afternoon. Yesterday morning when I checked the freezer it had completely defrosted during the night.
    Hope the info helps.
    Regards
    Greg

    Hi Greg,

To be honest, on a quick look, there’s multiple things that could cause it a if a fridge freezer doesn’t work it either doesn’t cool or over-freezes usually.

The intermittent bit could be the compressor cutting out, overheating.

    Could be the thermostat.

Could be a fan, possibly even getting jammed.

There’s not enough to narrow it down for you unless anyone knows these machines better.

Thanks for the info, the fan & compressor seem to work ok, theres no sign of water in the evaporator tray. The only thing I’ve noticed is that when I use the internal control to switch the unit off then on again sometimes theres the noise the compressor makes when its about to start, but it dosen’t, just the fan kicks in.
I guess my best option is to take out the £13.99 per month care plan Whirlpool have offered me.

That may well indicate a compressor fault then and, that’s not so cheap to sort out.

If it is the compressor I beleive its over £200 to replace so I’ll probably take out the care plan, it will be cheaper over the year.
    Thanks for your help.
