ParticipantI have a whirlpool awm 1000 bought in 2003, light usage, used once every 10 days or so. I used it today and the drum would start rotating normally and then stop accompanied by a squeal, slipping belt I presume. The drum would start rotating again then for a few turns and jam again.
I emptied the machine and then tried to rotate the drum by hand which took a fair bit of force. I removed the rear cover and took the belt off and tried to rotate the drum pulley and it was still jammed. It freed up again after turning it over by hand for a while and seemed ok.
I loaded the machine up with the wet clothes and put it on spin. It spun for about 30 secs and then got very noisy again and I switched it off,the Drum jammed again.
Can someone tell me Whats causing this? Thanks

Drum support shaft (aka Drum spigot) cracked probably. If the inner drum has a slight wabble in relation to the tub and touches the door seal as it goes round that confirms it.

when the Drum is jammed and I turn it by hand it will free out and then appears to turn completely normally, cant see any wobble in it.

Sock caught between drum and tub? Use a torch to spot it.

I was thinking that, looked around inside the door between the drum and tub but couldnt see any obstruction, sock could be gone in totally out of view? If so would the Tub and drum have to be dismantled to remove it?

Got lucky!,managed to locate sock by sticking small screwdriver through holes in drum. The sock got lodged at the tub drain point so managed to pull it through the drain hole after removing drain hose. There was a small plastic ball about size of ping pong ball floating in water at top of the drain hose. Is that supposed to be there?

Yes, leave the ball valve well alone!
