Whirlpool AWM029 – door lock/unlock problem

I’m having problems with my Whirlpool AWM029 door catch. First of all it wouldn’t unlock (door lock light stayed on after the cycle had completed). Some bright spark in my household worked out that it you hit the door once at about the 2 o’clock position, it unlocked. Now it won’t lock at all, therefore obvioulsy won’t start a wash cycle. (And I’m suffocating in dirty laundry…) Any thoughts on possible solutions? Could I fix it or is it an engineer job or a new machine job? I’d be eternally grateful for any advice…

Door locks get old, stiff and slow. You need one of THESE.

Power off if you intend to fit this yourself.

Thanks for the prompt reply! Is this a straighforward job that I could fix myself or is it best to call for an engineer? I can’t quite make out which bit the part is…

Remove plug. Slip band from door seal. Unhook door seal from front panel. Undo the two screws for the door lock. Undo three screws at the bottom of the front panel and it will fall off, revealing the lock.
