ParticipantHello all,
I have an old whirlpool AWM1400 washing machine (857024715000) that will not start, fill or spin. Very occasionally it works but usually stops at some point in the cycle, mostly between the delicates and rinse setting.
I have tried every different setting on the dial and different temperatures and it gives me the same effect. The dial clicks and moves once, a second audible click is heard and then … nothing. The only thing that happens is the drain pump runs occassionally, even though there is no water in the sump. The drain setting on the timer also works everytime, although, again there is no water in the sump of the machine.
I have checked the machine over and have found the following:
– There is an adequate cold and warm water supply to the machine.
– The drain pipe and where it drains to are clean and free of debris.
– The water valve screen filters are clear and the valves themselves are clear and appear to be in good condition.
– The drain pump works and is in good condition.
– All the internal pipes are clean and free.
– The pressure vessel is fine.
– The pressostat pipe is fine.
– The pressostat itself appears to work and doesn’t appear to be damaged.
– The door interlock works.
– The switches on the front panel work as expected. This led me to expect that the timer was at fault. I bought a new official whirlpool timer cheaply from ebay and fitted it but the problem still persists.
Does anyone else have experience of this problem with this machine or similar? Can anyone suggest what else to check or what parts may be causing the trouble?
Cheers in advance,
Donut.

Check the brushes on the motor.

Thank you for your response.
I have replaced the brushes on the motor and the washing machine appears to be working properly again.
One of the old ones tip had shattered and was not making a good connection.
I’ll check that first next time rather than going round the houses! 😀
Thank you again.
Cheers,
Donut.
