ParticipantMy Whirlpool AWM1400 has just stopped working for the first time (in 10 years) when it reached the rinse cycle. It drains OK but that’s all it will do. Now if I start it (from cold) on a wash, rinse or spin programme I hear 2 clicks, I’m assuming the 1st (louder) click is the door interlock, what would be the 2nd click? If I then switch off and then on again the 2nd click is heard each time. Can anyone tell me what the timer sequence is for this machine so that I can tell what these clicks mean? At one random point during my investigation when switching on, the inlet water valve (or valves?) started operating, and the motor sprang to life; I immediately switched off & switched on again and the machine was back to dead again. My first thought was that a water inlet valve wasn’t operating but as there are two operating valves ( hot & cold) I’m expecting the starting sequence to continue on the remaining good valve. However there is no “humming” noise from the inlet valve area so I think the timer is “stuck” before the inlet valve operation but after the door interlock operation. My other thought was the brushes on the motor need replacing but this only makes sense if the initial timer sequence is interlock followed by motor. Of course the timer itself could be the problem. Help!

Look for simple things first, such as cleaning & re-seating all board connectors & motor connector. When the interlock switches in are any of the lights on the front coming on?

It will probably be the motor brushes.
This machine rotates the drum as it fills. If the motor brush circuit is open then it stops.
Power off and plug out if you are going in…February 21, 2011 at 12:03 am #345174squashers

Thanks guys.
I’ll try cleaning connectors first as you suggest.
Do you know if the starting sequence is motor first followed by inlet water valve/s? If so I agree the brushes may be suspect.
Or is there some check routine after door interlock and before motor/water valve which might indicate trouble elsewhere?
There are no lights on this washing machine. -
