ParticipantHi, my 8 year old whirlpool creations awm 325 has started to make lots of noise on the spin cycle ( sounds a little like ive a couple of frozen turkeys in there 😆 )
i must say this appliance has served me well until now apart from a slight problem with a dodgy on/off switch . i worked round this by getting the power button on and no longer using the on off switch , powering on and off via the wall socket.
i realise 8 years is quite a good innings for a family machine but want to confirm whats gone wrong and whether its economically viable and within my limited skills to fix.
ive investigated the filter and there dosn’t seem to be a problem there
the hydraulic legs look ok as do the springs supporting the drum.
the belt came off but i managed to put it back on and its stayed on nicely
but the scary spin persists
is it the bearings perhaps?
thanks in advance for any advice

Almost certainly bearings – open the door, put hand at 12 o’clock and lift. If you can see the edge of the drum moving up and down relative to the edge of the door seal, the bearings have failed.
You would need a new hub assembly (p/no 4812 520 18065) to repair it, as well as heavy duty Torx bits, impact driver and a big hammer.
Power off when investigating.

hi penguin
thanks very much for the reply
i tried your test but it wasn’t obvious to me if the drum was moving more than the door seal .there seemed to be a tiny amount of play though. i assume thats enough when coupled with the nasty noise symptoms for a diagnosis. You would need a new hub assembly (p/no 4812 520 18065) to repair it, as well as heavy duty Torx bits, impact driver and a big hammer.
i have a hammer but its not very big 😳 lol
i’l ask good old dad if he can supply the reston scouring this site more i discovered another damning symptom = the rusty markation on the lower part of the ‘spindle’ area
i’l let you know if i attempt it ( i dare say i’d be back asking for heaps of advice anyway)
to be honest its more likely i’l either be asking for a quote from a local wg recommended engineer or asking if you think the Zanussi ZWF1421S is a good buy!
thanks again for the help

Bit of a dilemma really – the part required is £80 odd, plus the vat. At 8 years old, consider that the motor brushes will be due for replacement at some point soon, the drain pump will be worn by now and the door seal is almost certainly well slimed after all those 40c washes…….
As for replacement, the Zanussi’s not bad, Bosch is rather better, our own ISE appliance represents excellent value for money. The best is Miele and it reflects in the price. That old adage about getting what you pay for has never been so true!
HTH,
