ParticipantOn the Whirlpool AWM6163 8578081615101
I have changed the bearings(6304&6306) I am having trouble fitting the Bearing seal-v ring. It is quite a lot larger dia than the shaft so how do you fit it and keep it in place? & which way round.Shaft is 31mm dia, seal is 35mm dia.
I have checked and rechecked that it is the correct part (481253068001)
Can anybody please help me?

In several machines this type of seal usually fits on a ridge on the back of the drum spider and the flexible V part of the seal brushes against a polished stainless washer that is secured in a rubber seal in front of the inner bearing. I do not see many Whirlpools but this is how they usually work.

Simplybearings.co.uk do a good range of these seals with lots of info on profiles and sizes. Also very helpful on phone. The seal normally would fit in a groove on the rear face of the spider as Delahart said.

Thanks to both your reply’s but cannot get to the back of the drum spider as it has a sealed tank and there is very little space between spider and backplate.
I was wondering if the seal fitted into the back plate itself?

Hi Bernie,
I think you might have the 12nc wrong is this model 857081615101?
If it is this model then the tank is not sealed, once you take the motor off there are 4 bolts round the cast housing to remove and then the drum, backplate and cast bearing housing will then pull out of the back of the tub.

Thanks for the reply John.
I have got the cast housing off which holds the bearings I am just not sure where the seal goes.
Definitely a sealed stainless steel tank and the 12nc is correct 857081615101

this type of seal is fitted at bottom end of shaft next to spider
this seal contact a stainless steel disk that is in front of the bearings forming the water seal

The tub in this one is not sealed, if you have the cast off pull the shaft of the drum straight back and the stainless backplate will seperate, once the drum is out all you do with the seal is slide it down to the bottom of the shaft with the sloped edge pointing towards the bearings. The four bolts you took out are all that is holding the backplate on.

😕 Wonder if somehow the old seal with stainless counterface has come out of housing and is stuck to the spider?

Thanks to all of you that have posted a reply, John got it right it’s not a seald tank and the stainless steel backplate does come off with a bit of a tug. Once I could get to the drum the old seal was still in place on the end of the shaft.
Once again many thanks to all of you.
