Whirlpool AWM9000 new heater pops out

I’ve just fitted a new Whirlpool 481225928854 genuine heater to a Whirlpool semi-commercial AWM9000 (NC 8570 0841 5000). As I tightened the clamp the heater popped out.

Examining the grommet, I am not surprised, as it is a loose fit, quite soft, and tapers away from the outer flange. The grommet is only just deep enough to reach the inside of the drum, which is quite thick, so it disappears into the hole when tightened without gripping the inside of the drum.

I’ve heard about this kind of problem with pattern parts, but not a genuine part stamped “IRCA”. Has anyone else come across this problem on this machine?

I got it to stay in place by doing it up quite gently, but how long do you think it will last before it pops back out?

I went back today and sliced a piece off the old heater’s bung and slipped it under the new heater’s bung. It tightened up fine so I can now sleep easily.
