The service light is on, the door won’t open on my Whirlpool AWO/D 4505 washing machine.. The suggestions in the manual don’t improve matters.

Whirlpool say I need one of their agents to check the machine but their charge is nearly the cost of replacing the machine (with a guaranted used one).

Are they ‘right’, or does anyone know what the likely cause and solution might be that I can fix myself?

Is the light flashing and, if so, count the flashes as it’s an error code most likely.

That’s normally due to blocked pump or build up of crap inside the machine. Check the pump and filter and also carry out several 90oc washes

    Thanks for the replies.

The service light is steady, no flashing.

Here is a more detailed description:

When powered on the machine seems to start normally. i.e. it pumps out any existing water. (Checked by pouring a panfull in the soap drawer and watching it go out of the drum.

Then the ‘wash’ and ‘rinse’ lights come on as if it’s starting to do something but nothing happens – (apart from the ‘service’ light coming ol too).
No clicks, no whiring, no vibrating.

But the water inlet pipe does pour water freely when disconnected at theback of machine. So it looks to me like some solenoid or whatever which should open to let water in isn’t doing so.

    Does that sound correct?

I’ve clealed all filters of course and there’s no sign of accumulted gunge or similar…
