ParticipantHad this dryer a few months now (second hand from eBay)
All was perfect until about a month ago.
When drying sheets or shirts, it leaves small brown burn/scorch marks on the corners of collars etc…. This would indicate some sort of overheating problem…. ironically drying times are getting longer!
It used to take on average 35-40 minutes to get a full load dry from a 1600 spin in my hotpoint, now however the times are creeping up, and up! Longest its taken to do a load so far is 95mins!
I have cleaned the filter in the sink, have had a long narrow brush down its filter orifices and scrubbed the fluff out, and had a new vent hose on it. No improvement in drying times.
Can anyone shed any light on this one?

ParticipantHi,It sounds like you may have a drum seal fault which is allowing air to escape into the cabinet increasing the drying time and causing the drum to catch the clothes.

The brown ‘scorch’ marks are not related to burning. A Whirlpool AWZ121 is probably about 6 – 8 years old now so the likely cause will be worn support drum support wheels and therefore spaces where the drum presses against the front or back felt seals. Collars and other extremities will get ‘pinched’ in this gap and will mark. The loose fit will also increase drying through heat loss. It also taxes the heater. (Heaters for these are expensive!!)
Firstly, Power Off!! :plug:
Remove the lid and back panel. You can then remove the drum support (you don’t need to disconnect heater, but if you do, be sure to mark the wiring first). You can check the condition of the wheels and drum seals and replace as necessary.
Rebuild is a reversal of removal.
Remember, Power off at all times!!!HTH,
Steve.

Thanks for the replies, can you tell me if the parts are going to be expensive and if the job would be difficult if it needs repairing??!
Thanks!

The jobs not difficult (but I’ve had 24 years of experience with this stuff). The cost of repair is the barrier. The drum support wheels are around £17 each – a lot if you need all four. The felt seals are around £30 each (2 off). Then the belt could be worn badly (quite likely) and what about the heater…… 😯
Driers, in the main, change hands when they are worn out or faulty. Washing machines, cookers and refrigerators fare better as they are used all year round. It’s easier to spot a lemon. 😉
This drier sounds like a proverbial money – pit. Try to take it up with the seller as it was a substandard item or buy new with a guarantee.
Either way, quit while you are ahead.HTH,
Steve.
