Whirlpool AWZ121 button won’t latch

Out AWZ121 is a few years old and has worked faultlessly until now.
I works – the drum turns and it gets warm – while the button is held in but stops immediately the button is released.
It won’t work while the door is open but will work when the door is closed so long as the button is held in. There’s a mechanical link to the back of the button which appears to operate OK.
Could anyone suggest what’s wrong please or offer any fault-finding tips?

The switch is knackered, replacement one here in the shop
