ParticipantHi
This might be a simple one for all you knowledgeable ones!!!
Basically I noticed the warning light on the top of the freezer was on and that everything was slowly thawing out on Christmas Day (typically!). The thermostat was set to 3, as it has been for the four years I’ve had it, and it had been defrosted properly about 2-3 weeks previously. It wasn’t overstocked; in fact we had been trying to work our way through it and it was about half full.
I thought that the motor (?) had stopped working because I hadn’t heard it “breathe” (that’s what I call it when you hear it momentarily switch off/on, or whatever it’s doing, I hope you know what I mean!). However I did switch it off for about an hour (as the troubleshooting guide suggests) albeit probably too late and did notice it come on when I switched it back on. Still, it seems to be in a coma!
Am I right in assuming that the motor is dead and there is no point trying to fix the thing? I called Whirlpool and they wanted to send someone out at a cost of £80+. I figured it cost me about £100 in the first place.
So do I give/sell it to some nice freezer-fixing person so they can fix it and sell it on or try to see if the local rubbish dump take it.
Techies – it’s over to you…
🙂

Can you hear any noise at all from the compressor clairus, even if it’s momentarily ?

not as usual, no.
i just happened to hear something click on when i switched it back on, a slight hum i suppose. it’s not noticeable otherwise. i didnt think there was any noise coming from it up until then.
previously, when it was working normally, you would hear it periodically kick into gear or ‘switch down’ in it’s normal behaviour – this is what i was referring to when i said about it breathing (strange term i know!). apart from the warning light and the green ‘on’ light, you wouldnt know it was working at all unless you had exceptional hearing.

It’s one of two things then by the sounds of it, the click you hear is the compressor trying to start.
It will either be the starting device which is a relatively straightforward repair or the compressor itself has failed which would outweigh the cost of replacing the appliance.
If you need a definite diagnosis, pop your postcode up and someone here should be able to assist with a service visit.
Dave.

Thanks – I will have a little think about it. I’m on a pretty low income so I want to avoid paying for someone to come out really (not that I don’t appreciate the advice, I’m just being honest!), especially if it is going to be an expensive repair.
I suppose if it turns out to be a simple repair then it’s cheaper than a new one on HP (I don’t really want to do second hand any more, too much of that in the past!), then it would be worth it, but I don’t know do I?!
Thing is I don’t want to take it to the local dump if someone else could use it (that is a simple repair obviously).
Decisions, decisions. 🙄
I will honestly have a think though.
Thanks!

You’re welcome.
Sorry we couldn’t give a “definite” for you but this is very often the case with appliance faults and diagnosis.
Please don’t be tempted by the “cheapest price” in the stores if you are thinking of replacing the freezer as you may well be faced with the same situation in two years time or sooner 😉
Dave.
