ParticipantThe dryer runs, but no heat. Replaced the thermostats and heat element. The plastic cover to the connector at the end of the wire on the old thermostat had burned and cracked, but the connector and wire still seem fine. I did have to pry the connectors off of the old thermostats to replace them with the new thermostats. The fit seems fairly tight.
I rewired as it was originally — with a thick brown wire (green dot on connector) running to the green thermostat, out the other side through another green dot connector, then to one of the connectors on the heating element, back to the board through a thin brown wire and then back again with a thick brown wire (white dot on plastic connector) through the other (white) thermostat to the second connector on the heating element. Still won’t get hot!
Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated!

There’s another thermostat under the lower front plastic cover, which should be closed.

Thanks so much for your reply! Um, when you say front plastic cover, do you mean where the heat exchanger is, or does another piece of the cover need to be physically removed? I tried poking around, but hesitate to go too far until I make sure. I suppose once I see the thermostat I will be able to tell which one it is from the spare parts site.
Thanks again for your help — Meredith
Did the wiring sound correct, BTW — I made a drawing before detaching everything but then wasn’t sure I could read my own handwriting 😳

Ok, found the thermostat after locating the screws for the bottom plastic cover. I don’t have a proper continuity tester, but I rigged up a circuit using my son’s electrical science kit and it didn’t conduct a current, plus it makes a strange rattling noise. Is this enough of a confirmation that the thermostat is stuck open and should be replaced, or should I go borrow or buy a continuity tester? (I left many of my tools behind when we moved )
Thanks,

Science kit, eh? Battery, bulb, two bits of wire – you’ve got a continuity tester! If the bulb lights, it’s closed, which is good. If it doesn’t, it’s a deader. Rattling doesn’t sound hopeful…….
P/no 4812 282 08008 is the part number you may need; an email to spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk for prices and ordering.

Ok, a note for future reference! I’ve used my makeshift continuity tester to test the original thermostats I replaced and confirmed two things. First, my tester works well (it was a water clock from one of those science kits you can buy at borders — my son’s sixth birthday present!), and second, I should have used it before I ordered the first thermostat and heat elements. Turns out that it was the thermostat in the lower front panel that was the bad one. The others, although they had melted the plastic connector covers, were still fine. Thanks again for the tips, I hope the dryer will be working again soon!
Ah, hopefully a working dryer, but at least I’m better prepared to be a science project mom 😀

Result then! Keep the heater and stats for next time – you never know.
