ParticipantHi,
I’ve been out to a whirlpool dishwasher adg 7540/1 and the fault code is intermittantly flashing 11 times. I took the optical water indicator out and cleaned it, it was dirty, tried again and it does the same. I then swapped the OWI and still the same.
The machine starts to fill with water and after about 10/15 seconds the motor starts to spray and quickly stops, then starts again, stops, maybe 5 more times. Some times the motor then kicks in and works fine, but most of the time it flashes the error. When the motor is stopping and starting you can here the microswitch on the OWI clicking.
I have had a look at the motor, to make sure it wasnt the askoll, plastic type, as I have had many of these motor jam up just like the pumps but this is the mechanical one.
Just wondering if anybody can shed any light on this fault before I order the control board. Thanks for your help.

To avoid any confusion this machine does not have an OWI. The OWI is a combined NTC and Optical sensor which usualy has a translucent plastic cover on the inside. This machine has a diaphragm switch which is the one that gunges up around the grid on the inside.
Back to the problem at hand, did this appliance have a leak perchance?
If so I would change both the diaphragm switch and the 3 wired cable connecting it to the ccu. It was a well known problem in it’s day that when water got onto these it would cause pulsing of the wash pump. If you do a resistance test on the old a new you will probably get the same reading but replacing sorts the problem.

Yeah, sorry John, I meant the diaphram switch. It was all gunged up and to answer your other question no it hasnt had a leak, the bottom tray was dusty with no apparent water marks on my first visit.
I have replaced the diaphram switch, but not the cable. The cable was completely dry, It had about a week between visits to dry out from taking the switch out last time, to fitting the new one.I might try the cable but apart from that and changing the PCB i’m a bit stuck.

This sounds like a low water level problem to me. I’ve got a brand new pcb by the way, part no 481221838174 which I fitted to a machine, but it did not fix the the snag, so I removed it and there it has sat on my shelf for the past 2 years. When I put that part no into connections, it comes back with 481221838381, so it should be the right one. Going cheap. 😀 PM me if interested.

I thought that it was a water level problem. The first port of call is always the pressure switch with the diaphram.
It sounds as though the pressure switch is clicking too soon and the motor starts up, thinking theres enough water in, but when the motor sprays, it takes the water out of the sump and the pressure switch releases, making it fill a bit more until it clicks again and so on and so on. This is until it either throws up the fault of e11 or eventually does have enough water in to carry on.September 17, 2007 at 6:21 pm #227788smartin

Thanks for the advice smartin. Never thought about it syphoning. Its a new kitchen and I presume its plumbed in to the Ubend but I havent had a look yet. Its just that it only goes wrong when its starting to fill, on the odd time when it does fill enough and work, it seems to work for the whole wash and doesnt seem to loose any water.
But this is definatley worth a shot.Cheers

If the drain pipe is at the bottom of the standpipe causing a siphon then the machine will either open the water valve to get water to correct level or show a water leak fault code depending on the model. If the motor is coming on and off the root of the problem is the diaphram switch( as long as appliance is full of water ), easy way to to tell is to connect the spare switch you have to the cable and put a small screwdriver gently through the grid if the motor stays on it will be the switch or connecting cable.

Just a quick update for anybody interested. The PCB was at fault. I swapped it with the one supplied by AMS (dave) and it worked a treat.
I wont forget this one again. Thanks
