ParticipantHi Hope someone can help!
We have a Whirlpool Stainless Steel Double Oven:
Model: 858516115030
Serial: 140129030529
Date of Purchase: 22.05.02This unit has plastic knobs for the controls and they keep melting making them unusable.
We had the engineer out 4 times during the warranty period to replace the knobs. On the fourth visit he applied a “service fix” which was something to do with the cooling fan behind the control panel which would then stay on for longer and stop the knobs from melting.
Since the full warranty expired we have replaced 2 of the knobs (The engineer left us some spares!!) but now again 3 have melted and will no loger pop out or turn properly.
We took out the 5 years parts only warranty so I can easily phone up and get more knobs but surely this cant be right? Surely this is a significant design fault? Possibly even dangerous?
The oven is probably used 2-3 times a week, hardly heavy and the top oven (closest to the knobs) is never used. The grill is used (with the door open obviously) once a week at the most.
Whats my best course of action? Will Whilpool be sypathetic to this issue? The knob part no is: SQ: 1 PG: 069

No it’s not right, or certainly doesn’t sound it Rob. Getting a manufacturer to admit they’ve cocked it up is however and entirely different proposition.
The only thing you can really do is get a hold of Whirlpool customer services and see what they say. However I’d suspect that they’ll try to charge you the callout to come out with a set of knobs I’m afraid. 😕
One of the Whirlpool guys may be able to shed a little more light and perhaps offer any guidance.

The cooling fan function is to “cool” the capricorn PCB which sits behind the fascia panel, it has no bearing on keeping the fascia cool.
The knobs melt due to grilling with the door open, there is no heat deflector on these ovens. I can’t remember if this was a model which you should grill with door shut…please check your instruction book.
Also remember that any in guarantee repair carried out by WHIRLPOOL then carries a 12 month repair warrenty……so if the repair was completed less than 12 months ago you are still covered.
The whirlpool system records all in guarantee repairs so by giving your phone number to your local whirlpool centre they will be able to see your service history, just in case you have lost your receipt.

“Due to residual heat after grilling in the upper cavity, it is possible that the knobs / rings are damaged from the high temperature within the cavity. This is because the upper cooling fan stops after any cooking or grilling function.”
The service fix that has been applied is to keep the cooling fan above the upper cavity running after grilling, instead of stopping when switched off, to keep the controls cooler.
Worthwhile asking Whirlpool why you’re still having the problem

Hi Kevin
This melting is not caused by grilling with the door open. I’m faily certain of that as its just used too infrequently, even when it is used its only to toast the occasional crumpet 😀
DP’s post certainly seems to explain the issue, the engineer who visited did’nt give a decription of the fix but I can only assume it was this.
I’ll ring Whirlpool and let you all know how I get on.Thanks

Well I did’nt have much luck. The service agent said they were just the middle man and we would have to pay for a call out 🙁
In fairness its not their fault as they are only carrying out instructions from Whirlpool I guess.
I’ll write and try and get my money back by writing to Whirlpool. I will also look to obtain some confirmation that they HAVE fixed the problem.
Apparently this time they are going to replace some seals?????Hohum
