whirlpool dryer drum not turning

Hi guys i have got a whirlpool super capacity dryer mod no 3xLER5435HQ0 .The drum will not start turning when start is pressed motor just humms unless you turn the drum by hand .asume it will be a cap start but not done one of these before . Rich

does it turn itself once you give it a push, then if it has a cap its cap every time.

as these dryers dont have a capacitor, it will be a motor fault. just make sure the drum is free to turn with the belt off

yes on inspection there is no capacitor so how does motor start without a cap ? rich

It has a centrifugal switch , usually visible on the pulley end of the rotor – worth just checking this hasn’t seized or stiffened, something a quick squirt of wd40 might rectify ?

The motor has a start winding and a run winding.

When it has started the start winding is disconected by a centrifugal switch, and the run winding takes over. If the spring loaded weights in the motor stick, the switch is stuck in the run position and will just hum when you try to start the machine.

If you get a loud buzz when you try to start it, it usually because of worn motor bearings.

Either way a new motor is the only cure
