ParticipantHere goes again – 4th time lucky on this forum, I hope. You guys have been brilliant in the past resolving my technical or spare parts enquiries about domestic appliances, so here goes again…
Combined fridge/freezer has gone wonky overnight – light is on inside the fridge cabinet (so I know mains power is getting to it), but freezer is devoid of ice this morning, and fridge not chilled. No trace of any water from all that melted ice though – strange.
Switching off at the mains, leaving for a couple of minutes, then switching back on… I can hear a postive click (as if a thermostat or similar is being triggered), and then 5 or 6 seconds later another one. That’s all she wrote.
Precious little information to offer you on make or model. About 18 months ago, I made telephone enquiries at Extra Care Service (MFI?), trying to replace a broken plastic drawer for the freezer, and was led to believe that it might be a Whirlpool part – does that mean it’s a Whirlpool appliance, I don’t know as there are no visible markings or labels on the appliance.
The front of the operating manual has the reference APM 6842 at the bottom right-hand corner, and there are self-adhesive barcodes in the literature 8539 755 15070 and 11 0205 023866, but no indication of whether these are serial numbers or jsut last week’s lottery numbers. The back cover of the manual has 5019 508 33005/A, but I would not be surprised to learn that this is just a reference number for the manual, not the appliance.
Sorry I could not offer much more in terms of product information.
Any offerings on why the combined device might have failed in this way? Suggestions as to spare parts? I’m reasonably handy mechanically and electrically, having failed to blow myself or anyone else up with DIY repairs in the past.

If you wait next to the fridge for 5 mins do you hear the same two clicks again? If so seized compressor may be the fault.

ParticipantSimon,
Hi, and thank you for the quick response – I’m inclined to say “Yes – the same clicks are heard”. Whilst having breakfast this morning, I’m pretty certain I heard this. And in my head, I likened it to something being stuck – almost as if the current was being switched off because some rotating part was stuck.
How else would you diagnose a seized compressor? And as importantly, how would one go about un-seizing a seized compressor?
Incidentally, I located another item of literature with “Diplomat APM 6842” – does this point to manufacturer/model?

Replacement only. Click you can hear is overload cutting in because compressor will not start. Repairs@ for an engineer.
