Whirlpool FF new 2009 20TM -L4A+ (model 8586 430 15000 / serial 11 0839 012618)started ticking like a clock around May 2013. Not all the time, but most of the time. In August the freezer frosted over and it stopped freezing/cooling. Whirlpool engineer said it required new control board (part number…481221 778246)at £178. He told me to defrost FF every 5 days and it would keep going for a few weeks. Had to wait until October for the part to arrive. Replaced the board and the ticking started again within days. Engineer returned and said the real problem was that “there’s an internal gas leak which is causing a blockage and causing a number or problems including the gradual heating up of the unit. Unfortunately this is a terminal condition which shouldn’t happen for a 5 year old unit. There’s nothing else that can be done.” Thing is the FF is still operating with me defrosting it every 5 days…..I have no confidence the engineer is correct. He misdiagnosed it, giving me every assurance”it couldnt be anything else but the control board” back in August. Is this fixable?
Up to the last two weeks the temperatures were fairly stable but I have noticed that the FF is operating low/higher than the -18/5 degrees recently, and the ice is not always operating now.
it is a built in appliance with mirrored doors which are not longer available, so I am very keen to keep it if at all possible.
    any advice out there?

Re: WHIRLPOOL FRIDGE FREEZER…CAN IT BE REPAIRED?

    Hi

If the freezer is going down to -18 and then the fridge is cooling down also but requiring a defrost every 5 days or so then it probably won’t be a internal leak as that would cause it not to either freeze or cool. Maybe a defrost / thermal fuse problem.
