Chris,
Have a read of this, will you?http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.p … ic&t=12287
There are literally thousands of Whirlpool ovens………
That said, the hinges usually have some sort of locking mechanism. If the door is off, you’ll have to lever the hinges to the “lock” position or you’ll have no chance of slipping the door back into place.

it’s a built in oven and the model number is akz106/ix and it’s about 4 years old. there appears to be 2 bits of hinge sticking out of either side of the door and nothing left in the two remaining holes in the oven. The two pieces attached to the door appear unmovable.

This is one of these jobs that is hard to desciribe. The two pieces you see have definitely moved, you need to get some mole grips and attach them to the hinge part that is protruding. Put the door on the floor with the bottom towards you and pull on the grips till you can put the locking tabs back into position. It will take a fair bit of pressure to move the hinges.
There is a video here to show you how to take the door off so all you do is reverse the procedure once you get the hinges locked back into position. The video shows you a Bosch oven but the principle is the same. Use “oven door example 2” when you follow the link.

Thanks for the advice the door refitted quite easily once I knew how! However it still won’t stay shut completely so it doesn’t form a seal and hence doesn’t keep as much heat in as it should. When I first refitted the door it was only a matter of a couple of mm now the door is visibly not closing properly. It will move to the closed postiton when held but falls back to partially open when pressure is released. I presume that something has been over sprung when the door was forced downward too strongly? Is there anything I can do or is this now an engineer job?
