ParticipantOkay, this is related to my other post below, but, as I was thinking that maybe the 30 people who have read the other may not read this I decided to post again with a different question.
My partner called a local refrigeration engineer who has come out and had a look at the unit and told her, after some umms and ahhhhs that it needs a new cistern. What is a cistern? Does the cistern require to be replaced by means of an OA torch as we have been told?A prompt reply would be very much appreciated.
Sorry if I shouldn’t have posted in this manner but the mythical cistern costs £140.00 plus £60.00 to fit it! All the quick research I have done on Google re fridge freezers and cisterns turns up results about the bog! The only mention of a cistern on this forum (besides my own) is some chap who’s Hotpoint sounds like one. I am therefore concerned with speed.
Cheers,Phil.

The “cistern” as refered to is in fact the compressor or “pot” as it may be called sometimes.
No idea where the term “cistern” came from to be honest.

Thanks for the prompt reply.
So my question would be, why does the compressor require replacing when the freezer is fully functional?
Is there one for the freezer and one for the fridge?
I was under the illusion that the unit worked by drawing cold air from the freezer and shoving into the fridge via a fan.
This would certainly be backed up by the startup of the fan everytime the fridge door is closed. It must sense that the temp is too high and be trying to cool down the compartment but cannotI have spoken with the engineers recommended by this site and explained the situation, they seem to think it could be half a dozen things but not the compressor.
Cheers,
Phil.

I would tend to agree with them to be honest, it doesn’t sound like the compressor has failed to me either.
Asking them to call and make a diagnosis would be my recommendation 😀

Already been done, I expect them sometime on Friday afternoon.
Finding this site has been a marvelous help.
Being able to come to place like this for advice is a godsend.
It’s just a shame that these days you feel you can’t trust someone to give you an honest diagnosis without doing all the research first.
I certainly wasn’t happy with what my partner was told this afternoon as it seems to make no sense. If the chap was correct I apologise…………… but I’ve watched too much TV!
