Hi Everyone, I would appreciate any advice regarding whirlpool american style f/f model S25B-RSS31-A/G.

I purchased this appliance in 2003, but it was a 2002 model. Two days after delivery audio alarm was periodically ringing day and night, hyphens and ‘d’ symbol in display.

Experienced a year of this problem, food in freezer not frozen, condensation ruining veg and frozen solids in fridge.

After 7 visits by same engineer who was replacing parts for a second time, and an expired warranty, I argued that problems must be a manufacturing or production fault. Whirlpool wouldn’t entertain that, but retailer agreed to a replacement in 2004.
    Service: 858616615012 (110411010255)

Have had no problems until now. Big shop on Sat and filled freezer, assumed the hyphens and alarm was triggered by door being opened whilst filling. The freezer is very sensitive and usually does this for a few hours, but then ok.

There was no build up of ice anywhere. Thought problem maybe due to big load in freezer blocking vents, so I rearranged goods. No joy, goods have defrosted completely. Display is alternating between hyphens and -18. Fan noise and air being felt in back of vents in freezer, but its not cold. Also the air from the fridge vent doesn’t feel that cold either. My feet are starting to feel colder than the milk, and altering the temp and fast freeze doesn’t do anything.

Awaiting for engineer to call. However, since I have to pay for this and my previous experience of the engineer was to replace parts and see if the problem is fixed, should I insist that he has a Sam Module diagnostic gadget. Where do I stand when paying for new parts which doesn’t solve the problem?
    Thanks for reading

The hyphens on the freezer display indicate that the temperature has risen in the freezer to above -11 deg c. The “d” on the fridge display indicates a problem with the damper in the fridge.
There are a few reasons why the freezer may have failed. These include the compressor, compressor fan, evaperator fan, thermistor, thermal fuse or the main board.
The fridge won’t get cold if the freezer isn’t working as it takes cold air from the freezer into the fridge via the damper. From your description you may also have a faulty damper.
The SAM or service assist module, will allow the engineer to read the last stored error code, either hyphens or d, so I don’t see it being of much help in this case.
As to the payment part, you really need to discuss that with the repairer.

Thanks for your reply and list of potential problems. At least I feel more equipped when the engineer calls. Can confirm that the fridge is not working, but now understand why from your answer. Well, I’m off to drink my Beck’s before the flora marg melts all over them.

    Thanks
