I have a brand new 6month old Whirlpool Stainless Steel Oven and Hob installed as part of a new house.

I regulary clean it if it gets dirty during cooking with either hot soapy water, degreasing or antibacterial wipes and also sometimes window cleaner.

Of late I have been getting marks on the hob that I cant get rid of, it alsmost looks like rust spots and it is starting to spread across all of the hob.

I dont want to use anything abrasive like Cif incase i scratch the hob or effect the warranty.

Has anybody had any experiences like this what could it be and how can i get rid of it? Could it really be rusting, surely stainless steel should be stainless? What would you recommend as a good cleaner for a stainless steel (i did buy a stainless steel cleaner once from asda but that was useless).

    thanks

    Hi Wakey,

This is the best stainless steel cleaners we’ve found thus far, that link is for the pack which saves a few quid but you can buy them separately as well.

I use them on my stainless steel stuff without an issue and they just work. I also know Don’s used Chromol as well and rates it highly. The Helios is a bit more “aggressive” but very effective.

It certainly does what it says on the bottle 😉 I like the rich feel it gives appliances and the fact that a little goes a long way. Worth every penny in my book.

Re: Whirlpool Stainless Steel Oven and Hob – Rust Spots

No idea TBH, it depends on the grade of the steel used which I doubt will be as high as it could be as a lower grade contains impurities and other “stuff”, metals from memory, that can allow poor quality stainless to rust and there’s nothing you can do about it. 😕

We used to see the problem on dishwashers, before stainless steel fridges and cookers became all the rage, where some manufacturers cut the costs by using a poorer quality of stainless which would get this. People just assumed that stainless steel was stainless steel and that it wouldn’t rust but that’s not the case, it’s not that simple. There are also certain other chemicals and metals, such as silver and I think lemon juice, that can cause discolouration and tarnishing on stainless steel that can be irreversible. Basically you have to look after it properly if you choose a stainless finish or, make sure you get the pukka stuff but that ain’t cheap.

We also see this in cutlery in dishwashers a lot where stainless steel “rusts” and there’s several reasons, a browse around this section of the site will reveal a lot about the care of stainless steel. But in short, a lot of it isn’t actually real, proper stainless that won’t rust.

    Hi

Could be that something has been spilt on it and has allowed corrosion to set in.

This article may help http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/fix- … ances.html explain things.

Great thaknks for your help much appreciated, I think I’ll give those cleaning products a go, do I need both of them or just the one and is one more heavy duty than the other?

I may even give Whirlpool a ring to see what they say but will probably say thats its my fault and i havent looked after it properly and used an abrasive cleaner, to be honest the cooker and hood should have come with a user aftercare manual.

    thanks again

    Hi Wakey,

Helios is a more heavy duty cleaner and slightly abrasive, Chromol lightly cleans, is not abrasive and leaves a sheen on the steel.
