ParticipantThis m/c will wash ok, but will only spin slow – assuming it’s the clutch how can you tell & how do you get to it?
The gearbox shaft will turn by hand in both directions – is it still the consensus of opinion that this could be a gearbox problem?

Gearbox shaft should not turn in either direction by hand.

In spin mode the agitator is disengaged and is free to turn by hand. Otherwise the machine would try to agitate during spin and rip the clothes.

So if i put the machine in wash mode for a couple of minutes then unplug it, if the agitator shaft can be turned by hand it’s duff – is this a defining test for the gearbox of is there another?

Yes
What I usually do is :-
Fill machine with water and let it agitate for a few seconds. Switch off, put my hands in the water, grab hold of the agitator and you should not be able to move it.
Switch on to spin, let it empty, wait for the pause and the gearbox will clunk in to spin mode. Let it spin for a few seconds. Switch off, grab hold of the agitator and it should turn freely.
If you are getting slow spin, make absolutly sure that it is pumping fast enough, and with no blockages. If it is pumping OK then I would suspect the drive clutch. hth

Drive clutch p/n 481969018152 is easy to fit
Remove agitator
remove cabinet
remove pump and motor
undo 3 bolts and the gearbox will slide out
the drive clutch is on top of gearbox, held with a spring clip
the plastic brake lever comes with it
