Whirlpool Top Loader – Identification Needed

Hi All

I have been asked to fix a Whirlpool Top Loader but cannot find a model number on it anywhere and wondered whether you could help me identify it please. Here is a grainy image (Sorry taken on phone in poor light) of the control panel:-

The only information that I can glean is some part numbers as listed below:-

Motor 3950297
Timer 3954781
Control Panel (White) 8318455
Control Panel (Biscuit) 8316033
Pressure Switch 3366845
Control Panel Cover 8318789
End Cap 1 (White) 8271363
End Cap 1 (Biscuit) 8314851
End Cap 2 (White) 8271369
End Cap 2 (Biscuit) 8314852

The Writing on the front of the machine says:-

“Whirlpool Ultimate Care 2”
“9 Cycles, 4 Speeds”
“Quiet Wash Plus”
“Whirlpool Gold American Collection”

I think the clutch has gone in this machine (It releases the brake but won’t spin the drum unless you start it by hand) but need either a part number or model number for it otherwise the parts suppliers can’t help me.

Clutch is common to the whole model range 481969018152 🙂

Just for reference, the model and serial numbers are on a plate where the lid pivots …. lift the lid, scrape away 8 years of crusted soap powder ( taking care not to scrape the label away at the same time 😆 ) … et voila

work on the general model of: 3RGSC9455 much of the drivetrain is the same across the range, pumps and door switches differ IIRC

If only – the lid is clean as a whistle but there is no plate that I can find on it just a big label saying when to use what wash powder/programme.

Excellent – that means that I can finally bring a up a list of parts with some chance of finding the right bit and from all the normal suppliers.

it will be . lift the lid to 45 degrees , then look along the rim , usually just above the spout that chutes the water into the tub ….
but as the others state , clutch is very common to all the versions .

check for oil leaking out of the gearbox contaminating the clutch

very simple to drop box and check take about 15 mins

Thank you all for the help – went back yesterday afternoon with a clutch mech, there was no oil contamination on the old one that I could see (Would have some trouble getting the oil in there as it is above the gearbox and facing the wrong way), Comparing the pads on the clutch bands there was a thickness difference between the two of about one third, changed the clutch and it now works.

I forgot to take the camera with me which would allow me to take better photos of it, I had a good look for a model number but I am either being very dense or it doesn’t have one on it.

After doing more research I found a table that tells me how whirlpool makes the model numbers, putting the data that I do know into the table gives me “??G?C94???Q”, when I then put it into SIOS then the only machine that matches that data is “3RGSC9455JQ” (the same machine as eastlmark said). 😯

Unfortunately I have had a call back to it as it won’t spin under load (they didn’t have anything to put into it when I was there with the new clutch), it does spin when empty (which is an improvement on when I first saw it) – has anyone got any more ideas as to what could be causing this?

Had a look at this one again this morning – it won’t spin with a load in the drum but it will without, the new clutch looks fine though it feels like it is getting hot (should it get hot?), I am wondering now whether it also has a gear box fault (though it feels like there is no slip at all when I turn it by hand) or whether the bearings have gone (though it is not noisy and again feels ok turning it by hand). I am a bit stumped by this one now and would appreciate any help/guidance that you guys/girls can give me.

If it is a gearbox fault then I guess that I will need to replace/top up the oil – what oil is suitable for this?

If it is a bearing fault then what tip/trick is there to undoing the notched nut that holds the drum down or is there a suitable tool that I can buy in this country that will fit it?
