If the agitator is correctly fitted to the shaft (not loose and still has its splines etc) then you will need to strip down the gearbox to find out what has broken.
I haven’t seen this fault myself but here is some info that may help.
The agitate gear slides up and down the agitate shaft to engage and disengage the agitate action – it should be pushed down the shaft by a spring (the spring has a washer and cir clip holding it in position at the top), there is a cam and cam follower under the agitate gear that raise and lower it depending on which position the cam is in.
The cam is operated by the “shift actuator” which is situated under the rack and looks like a pincer.
You will have to strip it down to see what has failed but my guess (and it is a while since I have had to strip one of these boxes) is that the plastic cam or the spring has failed.
