Whirlpool WSF5574A+NX fridge warm

We have a Whirlpool American side by side fridge freezer. The fridge is getting warm. The freezer is operating normally. The vent between the fridge and the freezer does not open although it did for a short while the other day after we had defrosted it and reconnected it. It hasn’t done so since. I know most of the parts that can fail make it uneconomic to replace them. The compressor runs and the fan is also operating. We live in France. It is going to cost me €65 to call an engineer out to look at it and we know that if it’s anything but the sensor it won’t be worth spending the money on and we will just buy a new fridge freezer. I am banking on it being a sensor fault so thought the cheapest option will be to change the fridge sensor to see if it works. Does that sound like a plan. If it’s anything else we won’t bother as the parts are too expensive and it’s 6 years old. Thanks

Took the damper unit out and it was broken. I am assuming that it had frozen and snapped when the motor tried to open it. I have recently replaced the door seal because the vents were icing up. Noticed now that the damper does freeze but I assume it’s because it can’t open and shut. Feeezer is at correct minus 18
