A customer has described a fault on a 2 year old White Knight gas tumble dryer which sounds like a motor capacitor failure. I have two questions:-

1 Is Gas Safe registration required to renew the motor capacitor on a gas tumble dryer?

2 Is the motor capacitor as accessible on a White Knight gas tumble dryer as on non-gas White Knight vented tumble dryers?

I’ve repaired a few gas dryers, drums do fail aswell and yes the capacitor is the same to change as a vented but I am gas safe personally if your not I wouldn’t get involved

Thanks for the advice, but having checked out Gas Safe’s requirements, I decided to call out on a no fix no fee basis to check it out. The motor has its own separate access panel so there was no need to go anywhere near the combustion chamber. Access to the capacitor could could not have been simpler. So one fewer as new £300 appliance on the scrap heap.

The last person to work on it is responsible and it should be tested to make sure the appliance is safe and installed correctly to Gas Safe Standards.

What happens if it goes Boom as your public liability will not cover you if you are not Gas Safe.

It’s not worth the risk even though it will most likely be ok.

In future I think it would be better to take Kens advice and avoid this type of job.

The repair receipt will most likely be destroyed in the explosion.

Legally, Gas Safe registration is required for “work in relation to a gas fitting”. Reading the regulations themselves, and reading HSE and Gas Safe Register guidance I accept it is best to err on the side of caution and not to carry out any work on these dryers, without the relevant Gas Safe registration.
