ParticipantNow here’s a typical case of non-expert dealing with something he knows sod all about and is asking for help. Now I’m sure some brave soul will guide him in the right direction? (I wonder who?) Chances are before Repairs@ is mentioned this dipstick will likely electrocute himself or make a right hash in trying?

We shall see? 😉

I sense a bit of :stir: going on and as a Moderator someone should know better.
Whether this guy knows his stuff or not I don`t think it is doing this site any favours having a trade member arguing with a member of the public. This may lead to other members of the public being fearful to ask questions and could therefore impact on the numbers of repairs@ jobs.
If anyone feels this guys knowledge is insufficient to carry out anything safely then it`s better to say nothing than try and belittle him. A few simple pointers in a general direction, mention the safety points and dangers, mention the Repairs@ service and let him down gently. That way you`ve tried to help and not alienated anyone.
That`s my tenbobs worth. 😉January 10, 2008 at 9:54 am #239108kwatt
KeymasterI totally agree Barrie and that is how the vast majority of public posts are handled as well as being the policy of the site in the main.

All very well until he wakes up dead.
Maybe someone told him like it is, however we do have to be careful, and if anyting goes pear shaped, it is UKW that will appear on the news. This applies in all cases, all this one has done is bring it to the fore.
If he choses to ignore what he may consider is Granny shelling peas, then so be it. But I’m on the H&S side of this.

How do you do that then? 😀
I agree with you totally Alex but my point is if you read Kwatts reply to the guy, he told him nothing really but the punter was probably happy he got some sort of reply. Had he came back and said “what`s a meter?” then tell him that the fault could only be found with one and he should get someone in(and of course warn him about the dangers). I think a lot of this has been caused by the way the initial poster wrote his question. It did sound like he had the oven in bits with the power on.
Replying to his first ever post with what he has taken as an insulting comment is doing no-one any favours. If we can`t post something constructive then we shouldn`t post and you can`t get into trouble for that. 😉

Participantdont regret it for a second
he seems well qualified with his voltage checker, so wot the hell? im glad he doesnt want me to ‘both’ helping him
hes the sort of customer who will ring a good engineer, as and when hes removed/refitted as many parts/wires as he thinks he could posibly be somewhere like correct – after all its only an oven, right?
and some poor soul will have to spend ages fault finding, blissfully unaware of the customers actions
i’ll stop posting all together if you all have a problem with it
thanx

I think, like all customers, we have to tease the details and sometimes the truth out of them just to get the symptoms of a fault. Never mind what they have had apart!
A bit more info from this guy in his original post would have been helpful and may have saved a lot of hassle.
