KeymasterHi everyone (just registered).
OK, I’m looking for a decent but inexpensive tumble dryer – if they are not mutually exclusive.
I have found (here and elsewhere) that many brands are owned by the same parent company and are basically similar with different badges – hmmm.
To make it more confusing, my local independent appliance dealer sold me a Gorenje fridge and freezer last year and said that they make stuff for a lot of the brands including Smeg.
So which ones are the better brands and least likely to break down? Well, Miele seems to be the most recomended, followed by Bosch & Siemens.
Anyone else care to have a go? What about AEG or Zanussi?
Here’s what I have discovered about the competition in a parent comapny (brands) format:
Koc Holdong (Beko)
Brandt (Blomberg (Comet), Ocean and De Dietrich)
Bosch (Bosch, Neff, Siemens)
Crosslee plc (was Philips) (White Knight)
Electrolux (AEG, Electrolux, Tricity Bendix, Zanussi)
HooverCandy (Candy, Hoover)
Indesit Company (was Merloni Elettrodomestici) (Ariston, Creda, Hotpoint, Indesit, Philco, Servis)
Gorenje
LG
MFI (Hygena, Diplomat)
Miele
Samsung
Whirlpool (Bauknecht)regards

Correct except Servis, that’s a different Merloni 😉

Dr M,
It’s a minefield out there brand wise as you have discovered. But you search for a reliable tumble dryer need not be so exhaustive really. Go for a mid range popular brand product that fits in with your other kitchen appliances is the best idea 😀
A tumble dryer no matter who makes it is, is just a tin box with a tin drum a belt and heating element. Nothing too much to worry over at all. As a full indemnity against breakdowns take out an extended warranty 😉
Bosch/Siemens range are my personal recommendation

You could always buy a Bosch WTA2— series machine. Then you get a White Knight with a Bosch badge on the front and a nice stainless steel drum. Oh, and a two year warranty. 😯

Hi Dr M,
I have read what you’ve got there and it’s far from complete, especially in minor brands some of which are also owned by the companies that you mention there. There are also several crossovers in products that are not so easy to find.

Many thanks everyone for your constructive replies.
My tendancy is to go for Bosch/Siemens. I already have a Bosch washer and Siemens dishwasher which I’m pleased with and a 5 year guarantee sounds good. I’m averse to spending money for insurance policies that you never use.
An interesting comment about the White Knight badged as a Bosch though. How can you tell which way round it is? I’m sure they must make them in the same place anyway.
Is a stainless stell drum a common or rare thing?

Its usually associated with the ‘better’ models 😉
Oh! and the White Knight thing is not quite correct, CROSSLEE are the manufacturers of both White Knight and the budget range Bosch machines. And they are pretty good overall whatever as long as it has that all important S/Steel drum mind you….. ❓

Crosslee dryers are badged (or have been) as:
Bosch
Candy
Zanussi
Whirlpool
Hygena
Hoover
White KnightAmongst others, those are the ones I can recall off the top of my head. Frankly, more often than not customers have no idea what they’ve bought beyond the name on the fascia and even then…
