Depending on your circumstances of course you could always go it alone and become self employed? Been a good move for me this last 35 years. 😀

Totaly agree with Martin: Although going it alone is often tough it’s a lot more satisfying than working for someone else & you dont have to cover someone else when they mess up.

With the present financial climate and with the likes of Extracare (MFI) going belly up, relying on contract work is no option for the self employed. 🙁
No doubt someone will pipe up an tell us their stacked out with contract work but as a general rule it holds little water. But, ever the optimist, if the opposite were the case then do give aclarke some pointers.
Meanwhile the public out there need someone to fix their duff Diplomats and a guy like you will do well to let them know you’re out there and can help. In fact if you are in my neck of the woods I can pass all the Diplomats onto you. 💡

Hi
Write to every property letting agent in the phone book and get leaflets printed (do plenty tho 3-5k)and go delivering then see what comes. It’s suprising how many letting agents arn’t realy happy with who they use but don’t know who else to ring then your letter arrives and bingo! Leaflets are the same, annoying to people who don’t need it but great for people with the dishwasher thats been gone for ages or that funny noise on the washer they’ve never got round to doing anything about as they didn’t know who to ring. Plus the people you do work for just give them a ring and ask if all is well you could say you want to add a post code to your area or your just checking what area you cover for them as an intro?
Hope some of this helps

I know this is not ideal, but Indesit are seeking a franchise in the south cumbria/Barrow area.If anyone is really desperate it might see them out of a bad patch.

Never tried leaflets. When i started, we had 2 local newspapers, one of which was free. For ages, I advertised in both. Later, an advertising survey I did showed that the free paper gave 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the jobs, so I dropped the other paper, which was the costliest. However, different strokes work for different folks. Yellow pages was not cost effective for me. In addition to ma small display add, I also used to run a one-line ad in the articles for sale column. Print a few postcard sized adds an d display them in local post offices and shops. I got several jobs like this, including the local chip shop. Have yopur van sign-written [ £100 ] and be sure to have your phone number on the back doors. When i collect my grandson from school in the van, I often get women approaching me. Sadly, the just want the Washer fixed. Some say Parish Church magazines work for them. Leave no stone unturned.

5{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} at the very best though with the plethora of junk mail flying through folks letter boxes these days a more realistic response rate is less than 1{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}. 🙁

I did a lot of leafletting when I first started. I stuck a couple of peel off labels to each leaflet and I still occasionally see them stuck to machines now, more than ten years later.
It worked in some areas, less so in others. In some of the the posher streets round here, I’ve not ever seen the inside of more than one or two houses. My advice would be, do the council houses and long terraces first to get the work flowing in.
