ParticipantIf you haven’t heard of IoT before it’s the art of making everyday objects connected to the internet. This year, the Internet of Things will embed itself into smart household devices such as the washing machines.
The new generation of smart washing machines will have built-in Wi-Fi and software that transmits data to downloadable apps on the user’s phone. This apps would allow users to remotely control washing cycles and receive finishing alerts.Does we really need a washing machine controlled by your mobile phone?

No.
It’s been well documented on here way back to 2005/6 IIRC.
It’s never caught on and I can’t see it happening.

The new British made Ebac S – series washing machine apparently has Bluetooth control designed for smartphone devices. It will include a ‘talkback’ feature for visually impaired users.

I also don’t think we need this. I don’t see myself checking my phone every time the washing machine finishes a cycle. Even if i do it what kind of info will i get. Imagine how i get a message in the office – “your washing machine ended a cycle”. Ok, so? 🙂 Not really practical in any way.

‘Oh ye of little faith’ as the saying goes. Think beyond the time stone age man invented the wheel and realise how technology has provided things today we never ever dreamed we needed at yet are now regarded as essential.
Digital technology in the home will soon be all encompassing. Your smartphone will have the ability to do far more tomorrow than it can today. All cellphones have sat nav, the power to access the world wherever via 3G/4G, soon enough 5G/6G ad infinitum. The power of your phone to check your house security, your car, your kids. Switch your heating on/off, lights on, check the status of appliances, and so on and on.
As for your white goods, facilities like : diagnostic reports of any faults encountered, programmable preferences and updates, energy reports, audio commands, security settings and such like.
Technology advances, some make good use and others don’t. It’s nice to have the option.

Some make mission impossible tumble dryers that self destruct.
I wonder if there is an app to let you know when the house has burnt down.
😮
