ParticipantA job this afternoon took half an hour longer than it should. Complete tub assembly change on a wm52. Took the machine outside to work on and the customer followed me out giving me a running commentary on everything I did (struggling to get old heater back into frontplate…’oh you’re struggling to get that back aren’t you’ 👿 ) To stop me gritting my teeth I permanently had two cable ties in my mouth to chew on. I eventually drew the line at him telling me where the split carbon had landed inside the motor when removing the brushes. After going back to the van to take time out for five minutes, he followed me back into the yard, was just about to tell me WHERE I HAD FINISHED OFF…..When he was told in no uncertain terms I’m sorry Mr P you’ll have to go back inside or this machine will not get finished. If I’d said the words that I was thinking I’d have been clobbered.
I know people are inquisitive etc but it gets to a point that when your questions are being answered with words of one letter that customers need to realise the engineer no longer wishes the pleasure of your company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rant over…better now 😥TC

Anyone who has been in this trade for any amount of time would have to be very lucky not to have come into contact with this type of customer, we have all had them. You are right that once the engineer is giving one word answers the customers need to be real thick not to understand that you no longer wish to talk. At the end of the day its all part and parcel of dealing with Joe Public. lol

Involve them…….
“I think I’m ready for a cuppa” buys you at least 5 minutes….
“We’re going to need a couple of old towels” is a good one.
And various others, learnt over the years. The other one that will work is “It’ll cost you £X if I can get it done in a hour”. Very effective in Yorkshire.

I usually find grazing their shins with the toolbox lid helps. 👿

Yep, we’ve all had ’em, the worst ones without question IMO are older retired blokes. I had one recently who actually pullled up a chair to view the bearing change on his WMA.
2 hours of inane comments later, he was still there. only because his daughter is a long standing valued customer did i manage to get through it.
I always find it difficult though, being rude to people in their own home, but some simply CANT take a hint. The way i usually play it is by going selectively deef, giving one word answers, & generally ignoring their presence. Works for many, but for some the penny never drops.July 4, 2008 at 3:35 pm #256840smeghead

Laughed out loud when i read that ! Had exactly the same thing happen with a right nosey old bird in her 70s ! Think she actually buggered off and did her knitting or whatever after the head butt.. Hellish when you have to resort to violence to get rid of them!! 😉

If the machine is live during test with lid off then I tell client to stand away from machine also if a cat is about I ask that it be removed from room then door closed same with kids.
As a non smoker if client lights up then they are welcome to stay and watch with fag out or smoke in another room.
Regarding talking, if it gets to much blah, blah, blah then I say you are welcome to look but sorry I have to concentrate on what I am doing so may not engage in conversation.
This is all done in a polite manner and have never had any problem.

Hand them a screwdriver and say “I am glad your watching as I am not sure where all the spare screws go !!” :D.
The look on there face is priceless .
Generally I find if you explain that you need to concentrate and that you will explain what you have done / changed / tested at the end most people leave you to get on with it.

i quote “If the machine is live during test with lid off then I tell client to stand away from machine “
The type that leans on the machine starts pointing right into it as well normally scares the hell out of me, had a guy once who started wiggling the wires round and the best one iv seen yet years back when i started at merloni was put with an enginner to show me the ropes hed just finished a backplate he had the back off looking for leaks she stuck her hand right in on spin right into the direction of the pulley, he grabbed her hand and pulled her back, she wasent happy at all after we left the area manager said she was threatening with the police as shes claiming assault and wanted compensation!!!!! can you believe it!! what planet are they from at all?

ParticipantThe one that still scares me when I think about it, replaced interlock and large double timer on Bloomberg washer, when testing machine customer was cleaning and actually leaned over and put her hand on the the timer as it was running!. I grabbed her hand and told her to be carefull. She was completely oblivious to how dangerous it was even when i left. Still dont know how she didnt get electrocuted.

Why on earth do you need to test a timer and a door lock with the top off, if the customer had got killed you would be doing time for manslaughter.
