You can’t always test machines with the lid on. Every time I change brushes on an old style Hotpoint I run it to full spin speed with the lid off to check for sparking. Obviously if anyone gets too close I would warn them but I would not physically intervene unless it was a small child who could not understand my verbal warning.

I’ve grapped peoples/childrens/cats hands or arms to stop them going inside the m/c 🙁 I think it’s some kind of human nature to touch the strange unknown thing.
Anyhoo… back on topic. Martin had the best idea before. You look the customer straight in the eye, and say…
“There’s alot of expensive gear in my van, and there’s no alarm on it. Can you go and watch it for me?”
Or if they haven’t made you a brew, just do what my brother (BSH engineer) does. He says…
“Oh no, don’t say your kettle is broken as well?!?!?!?!”

After reading this thread I’ve decided to invest in fifty feet of red and white striped plastic tape; that’ll keep ’em out.

Last time I said that (working for Merloni many moons ago) the customer complained about it, said she felt pressured to make me a drink when she really didn’t want to.
Indesit being the fantastic and intelligent people they are gave me a bollocking 🙁

This all reminds me of an incident a lot of years ago, went to an old Philips front loader that was leaking. When i arrived the floor was wet through & the customer (a policeman) had already got the top off & the machine half out of its enclosure. With the floor as wet as it was it was impossible to see where it was leaking from,so i tells him to keep back while i put it on a fill programme sure enough i spots it trickling from under the dispencer! ” I’ve found it ” i says,”just need to pull the m/c out a bit more”,so i goes over to the socket to pull the plug only for pc plod to grab the cabinet & obiviously some live item with wet hands thinking he was helping, when he let out such a yelp. When i look back it was a good job i was there to switch the thing off cos as sure as eggs is eggs he would have done it himself if he’d found the leak on his own & maybe not be with us! I still see him today& i’m sure he remembers that day well!

Ha 🙂 Fantastic!
I wish that would happen to me bro, just to teach him a lesson.
Having said that, that Merloni customer should have been told the importance of keeping the engineer well lubricated.

GrahamMaybe he was being efficient and doing a full functional test! 😛

I have had a few of these lately including a flipping dog. The one with the dog she says oh he is friendly and wont get in your way, so the dog kept nudging as they do, I asked her to remove the dog and she became agitated with me. I asked if she could take the dog to work and the reply was of course not, I asked if her other half could take the dog to work and had the same reply. I then explained this is my area of work and according to HSE no dogs are allowed in any place of work, she quickly put the dog outside. I use the same tactic on nosy customers, and say are you aware to HSE standards you are not allowed in the vicinity of my place of work, also that I supposed to do a RISK ASSESSMENT and let you know what to do in the event of anything happening to me, also if anything happens to you that you are not insured and my policy does not cover you. Also I have legal right to put up a barrier similar to those the road guys use, to prevent customer from coming too close to prevent injury.
This shuts them up, and if not then I ask about there work and would they want someone like me peering over there shoulders etc.
WORKS EVERY TIME.

Went to a fridge/freezer a few years ago with water in the bottom of the fridge – the pipe to the top of the comp was blocked with gunge.I tried unblocking it from inside the fridge but couldnt quite get it clear. The customer started mithering ‘do you know what youre doing?'(grrr..).I went round the back and blew up the pipe just as the customer opened the door of the fridge. The gunge out of the pipe hit him right on his beak and his face was covered with it.I dont know how I kept a straight face.
