Most likely cause is a faulty door interlock switch.

Check that the filter is not blocked and stopping the water from escaping…. If there is water in the drum then the sensor will sometimes stop the door from opening

This machine does not have a filter and and no sensor to prevent the door opening. Therefore as iadom said, it most likely is the Door Interlock (Part No 1602390) and that will need replacing!

http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.p … ucts_id=86I have one of these machines in front of me at this moment.
This machine does have a ‘Cage filter’ that is located inside the ‘drum to pump’ hose; To access the filter, remove the backplate of the machine, then opening the securing ring at the top of the hose, disconnect the hose from the drum; Therein you will find the cage filter. If blocked the lower half of the outer drum will have retained water and caused the pressure switch to activate the door lock.
Make sure that when doing this that the power is swiched off as if this is the fault the lower half of the outer drum will have retained water which will disperse during this process.

Before this turns into a row –
1) The machine in question is fitted with a filter, which is not directly user accessible.
2) This machine is fitted with a straightforward delay lock. Water being retained in the drum will not affect the operation of the lock.
3) The door may not open because of the lock failing in a locked position; it may equally well be the latch plate breaking away from the inside of the door.Regards,

And to finally put this to bed, verbatim from Hotpoint manual No: 5404670 Issue 1, Sept 99 for Models WM 51/52/53… page 6.
Door Interlock
“The door interlock is an electric delay type fitted with a PTC and bimetallic strip. the interlock is energised whenever a programme is in progress and is de-energised only when the programme reaches an End position. The interlock takes approximately three seconds to energise and one minute to de-energise. these times may vary in extreme ambient temperatures. There is NO water protection with this type of interlock”.

ParticipantCorrect, I was wrong, the pressure switch does not affect the switch/lock operation of this machine.

This is a typical case of too many experts spoiling the froth! :rotl:
Gordo had the problem over a week ago after all and I bet he just yanked the door open anyway 😆
