Sounds like a chafed wire where the loom from the timer to the motor is zip tied to the cabinet. Possibly a tacho wire earthing giving the motor control problem. If it was originally fitted with an FHP motor the loom tends to chafe where the wiring is strapped to the metal motor connector mounting plate.

Is it an old GEC motor? if so check the yellow tacho wires are not chaffing on motor casing, these can cause overheating or spin on wash i always tie them to the brush wire with a cable tie as a matter of course.

thanks for the reply
i replaced the old motor with a fhp plus i cant find any chafed wires wierd one is ive got it on test in the workshop now and it seems ok is it normal for a neon tester to light up on the body of the motor when the earth tag is off and dosent light up when the earth tag is on as its still doing that

Sounds like an earth fault on motor itself.
Why do you use a phase tester? A test meter is more reliableOctober 17, 2007 at 8:42 am #231176maltheviking
ParticipantRe: wm63 hotpoint
Chuck your neon tester away it is only good for a quick check for a live not for electrical safety or earth leakage
Test the motor with an insulation tester to get a correct reading 😉October 17, 2007 at 10:29 am #231177admin

i am aware of that ive allready checked ins and cont perfect reading i know what your saying about the neon i just thought it was wierd why it should light up when the earth tag isnt connected

result
found an internal break on the loom from the timer to the motor about 2 inches back from motor pulled at wire and it broke feeding tacho it was holding on by a few strands which is why it showed continuity from timer to motor you allways get one eh
thanks for your imput
