strange one here, i have searched but cannot find any links.

wma 33 geniune door seal needs changing every 2-3months due to sludge & gunk, black marks that cannot be cleaned off.

If used with powder and long Programme will last 8 months,(but clothes hate this, powder makes clothes very hard)

If used with liquid in ball and short programmes lasts 2 months

It’s like greasey black gunge that will not wash off and marks clothes.

    Any ideas ??

will be fitting new seal on wednesday so can post pictures of old seal if required.

PS all detergent is non-bio. and water area is soft

    many thanks

Re: wma 33 door seal, soap damage!!

It suggests that the water supply has a large amount of algae in it. Hotter washes using powder with a small bleach component instead of liquid can help. It happens quite a lot in this area which has very soft water. It can also be caused if anyone in the family suffers from eczema, the creams and oils used react very badly with the door seal. If you look in the soap drawer I would bet that it is also quite black underneath and inside the top of the dispenser. Using drum descalers can also help.

PS. I always use powder or the square tablets that go in the drawer and a good fabric softener and my clothes are soft and fluffy. 🙂

My machine is a WMA and although I get the black gunge on the cold side of the soap dispenser and drawer, I have never had to change a door seal on any of my machines because they have marks on them.

    @iadom
    you are spot on.

One member of family using creams etc for skin condition.

Very soft water area, welsh valleys!!( no sheep shagging jokes now.. i am not welsh, i just live here, love them really)

had new half drum 3 months ago, seal was new then.

powder leaves white marks in creases etc on black or dark clothes.

is it the lack of bleach etc or liquid / powder situation or short wash problem.

for the record what tabs & conditioner are you recomending.

has anybody spoken to Hotpoint about this.

I am getting grief that i haven’t fixed Machine probably etc

give me a broken door switch or blocked pump anyday.

    thanks in advance

I have one customer that I had to change three seals in less than three months. The teenage daughter had a severe skin problem. I pointed them to Hotpoint’s website and they ordered the drum descaler that Hotpoint recommend online. I also advised them to pre soak all items of clothing that may have come into contact with the creams and this has made a big difference.

I had a customer with a similar problem, she was a masseuse 😯 (o’er mrs) she used oil and it perished the door boot and sump hose on her w/pool F/L. The sump hose still goes every few months but solved the problem with the door boot by fitting a neoprene one instead of normal rubber. Dont think Hotperloni do one though.(she pays cash by the way!)

Many years ago we had severe problems with the black rubber doors seals on Hotpoint machines that where used in chip shops and other catering establishments. The fats reacted with the detergents and caused the rubber to break down into a black sticky mess. At the time Hotpoint supplied a very expensive butyl rubber seal for use in these cases.

That’s interesting about the different material seals. I have a customer with a bowling alley and the polish stuff they use wrecks the seals, makes an oily mess.

Didn’t Hotpoint make two seals for this range of machines, one was grey & lesser found one was a beige door seal which was used on some of this WMA range, not sure if they had different rubber properties or not, perhaps some of the Hpt guys can clarify..

Just a cosmetic difference. The biege seal was used on the Natural Linen models.

Well it lasted over nine months this time, I suppose that is better than the couple of months the previous one lasted but I have just been back to fit another seal on this machine.
The problem is that because of the extreme nature of the daughters skin condition, they find they cannot use Ariel/Daz type detergents and at the moment are using Fairy Non Bio. I have now suggested using Ariel or Daz tablets for the rest of the family ( two other children ) and using the Non Bio powder for the daughters washing only.
I may bring this seal to Sibson to show it to the ‘ detergent expert ‘ , he may have some suggestions but I think the only real cure is a seal made from different materials such as neoprene. How many manufacturers today will go down that route. 😥

Or would they be better with a toploader? Perhaps keep a twintub somewhere for doing the daughters clothes.

Fitted kitchen and available space would rule that out unfortunately. I did suggest she left home 🙂

The UKW meeting next month will no doubt enlighten many of us regarding these problems we encounter with door seals and the like 😉

Meanwhile, you may have noticed that Hoover/Candy machines (produced since 2003) do not suffer nearly as bad? That is due partly to the fact that they now fit door gaskets which incorporate an ‘antimildew chemical component’ within the rubber compound 😯

No doubt this magic formulae will be incorporated in all makes in the very near future 😆

Until that halcyon day arrives, keep replacing those door seals and advise your customers against liquid detergents, wipe the door seal after each wash and to leave the porthole door ajar whilst not in use :lesson:
