WMA (hard) spider bolts??

Had a bearing job on a 6 year old WMA this afternoon, 30mm bearings.

The bearings had collapsed and badly damaged the drum rear half, pulley had sliced through it. 😯

Customer was OK with new 35mm drum rear and spider job so I cracked on.

Whipped out my trusty titanium drill to drill out the old spider bolts, usually takes less than five minutes to get them out but the drill wouldn’t touch them.
Tried all three bits that I had, bought two new Bosch ones but they were the same.
I have done hundreds of these and never, ever had this problem before. 😥

Did Hotpoint stick some harder bolts in some of these, anyone else come across this?

Fortunately an old friend of mine has an engineering firm and he popped it up on his rig and using cobalt drill bits had them out in no time at all.

I’ve given up on the titanium bits the last lot i bought wouldnt look at them, i bought half a dozen 8,mm cobalt drills and a tin of drilling and tapping fluid for about £25, and it is like night and day, JJ

I found your lucky if you can ever drill the bolts out. Just use an angle grinder to cut the things off close to the end of the spider. the final few threads then offer little resistance.
having said all that I now get very few of these jobs as any quotes over the ton usuall result in “Oh I think I’ll get a new one”

As i said in my first post, I have done hundreds of these and this is the very first one that the titanium drill wouldn’t touch.

I stopped drilling them out ages ago. I always give them a good wack with a lump hammer and a blunt punch, I have yet to come across one that wont come out using that method although some need a bloody good wack!
I went to a Lux oven last week and the inner panel screws were rusted in and the heads almost completely rounded – the hammer trick worked for those too!
