ParticipantCustomer complained of a constant sharp knocking noise out of their WMA40 washing machine. When i visited it was as described, when you turned drum by hand once every revolution theres a loud crack. Checked with belt off & still doing it so not motor, i’m thinking its a broken spider leg.
How much should i quote for this job & what does it entail. Are the bolted on like previous models?December 18, 2006 at 1:35 pm #198185PIP-pm-

Wouldnt like to comment on how much to quote but these are held on by torques screws (the little star shaped thingys that join the tub together) i have never been able to get one to undo yet i usually cut them out of the arm with oxy acetelyne 😯

…and I’m thinking it’s a broken spoke on the drum pulley? 😉

Never seen a spider fail on one of these and the water round here goes through other spiders for fun. First time for everything but I doubt it will be spider.

You should drill them out, I tried 8mm bullet drills but they used to last for two or three bolts, if you were lucky. Now use standard shape 8mm Bosch titanium drills from B&Q, goes through the bolt heads like butter.

Cant really see pulley as no access plate on the back of these anymore, just to confirm, when i removed belt you can hear noise but not as bad

titanium drills burn out for me. best way to remove spider I have found is to “carefully “cut through the spider arm and bolt as close as possible to the drum with an angle grinder. this will reduce the fixing thread to just a couple of turns which is of little resistance.
mind you I bet the spider isnt broken there too chunky proberbly a bearingwilf

I tap the spokes in turn, with a spanner etc. if one is broke it will sound different to the other spokes…..

Has anyone every seen a metal WMA pulley break, it doesn’t have spokes like the 9000/ WM series. I have never seen one fail.

I have never seen one of theise spiders break and have done hunreds of them. Either something between drum or a broken bearing.
Buy the way the easiest way to get the bolts out is in a piller drill. I use a drill bit set from machine mart and co bolt tiped and the 8mm bit will last ages. But that is on the piler drill. If I use it in my cordless drill, appart from being hard work the bits dont last long at all. 😀December 18, 2006 at 10:15 pm #198195DDSDDS

i have never seen one of these spiders break or the pulleys’s.
but i have seen many many loose pulleys which cause loud cracking noises when turned by hand this is where i would look for the noise source should just be your flat fee for doing the work i would charge 35 + for it:)December 19, 2006 at 7:13 pm #198196admin

Time to “bearings change” or inner tub spider is broken.
Open the door: one hand on the back side = keep steady the puley
and other one on front try to move drum up and down (without rotation) :bounce:
You should fill on the back movements of drum (bearings to change); if not then spider is broken.Baron 8)
With belt OFF…
And also plug.. OFF…December 19, 2006 at 8:15 pm #198197iadom

If the spider is broken on this then it is the first instance I have ever heard of. I did have one WMA based washer dryer that had a 20p coin wedged between the drum spider and the stainless steel inner drum at the very edge of the drum, catching as it revolved.
I won’t go as far as to say I would show my posterior on the town hall steps, but I will donate £50.00 to a charity of the OP’s choosing if the spider is snapped.Jim.

Jim, accepted… is good also one digital beer
Inside drum I had (if I remember good) four times unlocked axel( bearings axel has made a little movements inside spider ) X— :bounce:
… so is like one broken spider. 😈
