A prime candidate for an electric vehicle then, a second hand milk float would be perfect. And I am only half joking there. 😉November 12, 2011 at 7:51 am #363512garn

Oooh.. Just tried a Pug Partner Professional today. Was not too sure about the position of the gear stick (it’s on the centre console below the radio) but had absolutely not problems with it and it drove really well.
Good possibility of a new Pug or the Citroen Equivalent (Berlingo Enterprise) but really want to get one before the new Euro Emission regs come into force on 1 Jan 12. Euro 5 2012 vehicles are already available, but as I under stand it, all vehicles manufactured after this 1 Jan need to comply to Euro 5 regs. Unless I’m wrong, I would try and stick to tried and tested Euro 4 spec vehicles. As with any thing new, it all takes a bit of time to settle down and iron out problem areas.
Back to Euro 4 spec Partner/Berlingo vehicles: The prices vary greatly and the guy at the Pug dealer said do NOT under any circumstances pay any where near the RRP/RSP.
This is a very good price and should be used as benchmark:
Berlingo 1.6HDI 625 KG load 75 HP £8995+ or
Berlingo 1.6HDI 850 KG load 90 HP £9997+

One a business and one a private purchase. As if buying selling cars is not stressful enough I’ve got my eldest learning to drive but it’s ok, the Valium worked for me. 😀 😀 😀 😀

I think this thread is more to do with whether or not you use a van or a car in your business activities adv, and little to do with mpg. At just 100 miles a week you shouldn’t worry at using either though we would dearly love you to share with us your current mode of transport?

The bugger to all the distance thing is townships… round here, you may only need to go one mile down the road but sometimes that one mile can take you half an hour.

If you really do only do around 5000 miles per year then a new diesel is not for you, you really need to be doing 10000 to 15000 miles per annum at least to make a new diesel a sound investment.
A decent second hand one, preferably not with DPF or DMF would be OK, other than that a small petrol van or estate is going to give similar performance so the real answer to your initial question is one that you alone can answer, ‘car or van’ its up to you. 😉
If it wasn’t for the very high cost of new electric vehicles then one of those would be perfect for you,

You could find modern, fuel efficient petrol engines to do that.
As for diesel it really does depend on if you are buying second hand or new.
Generally diesel engined vehicles cost more to buy from new and are most fuel efficient when they get hot. Diesel fuel is around 10p per litre more as well. Also the modern DPF’s ( Diesel particulate filters) in them will soon get clogged up with such very low mileage and they can be very costly to fix/replace.
You can do your own research on all types of vehicles quoted mpg figures but in reality you will be hard pressed to achieve the figures given with your very short, stop/start journeys.
Only 20 mpg from a 1.8 Escort estate is not great, I was getting 25 around town in my last Volvo V50 which was a 2.4 auto petrol engine, how old is the Escort?

I currently run a Citroen Nemo van. Cheap as chips. Managed to get it brand new 3 years ago for £6000 plus Vat. I manage about 55mpg. Its says it should do 65mpg.
I’ve done about 80k (1.4 diesel) in it already and i’m thinking about changing at the moment before I get any unwanted repair bills and this topic is very apt for me.I always used to use a Focus estate for my 2 previous vehicles and they were great and I’m thinking that maybe I want to have a little bit more luxury than the van again. I’ve been looking at either a Mondeo estate or a Citroen C5 estate. Both are a great size and much bigger load space inside than my nemo.

I have always been a fan of VW Transporters.
Just changed mine this year as the old one was 10 years old. The thing is that VW’s are still worth something after 10 years comapared to a Ford Transit, I was fighting them off with a smelly stick when I sold it, V dubs are turned into surf vans so it’s worth looking after them.
Returning aroung 35mp combined. 104PS (bhp?)though they say the 140 does better MPG, £115 road tax
The new VDubs can shift, a bit too fast as I think I may have been nabbed by the “Cash Cow” speeding camera today, just 200 yards off a dual carriageway doing 60, 50 limit for vans 😥November 14, 2011 at 4:33 pm #363525adv
