ParticipantHi guys/gals,
Please could you read/list edits/leave opinions on the following please..
George
***Notice to all members***As part of our ongoing attempts to increase the benefits that you receive for your membership, the WTA have partnered with an outside insurance brokerage to bring you WTA Insurance; The discounts are in, but are not restricted to, Public Liability, Employers Liability, Tools, Single Vehicle & Multi Vehicle, and Sickness insurances, and Insurance-backed Extended Warranties for New appliances, and for Appliances following repair, and 1 year Insurance-backed Warranties for Reconditioned appliances.
You may in the near future be contacted by telephone or email by a WTA Insurance operative to discuss your needs in this field… It is in your interest, to explore what is being offered, to query what you may require as a blend of what has been offered, or to request information relative to what you require but has not been offered.
If you would prefer not to be contacted regarding these benefits please contact us to let us know.

I would rather have an opt-in option rather than an opt-out. I don’t think we should be giving members details to an Insurance company for cold calling without their express permission.
I also would not say “a WTA Insurance operative”.

George and I had a long conversation about this ,He has secured a written assurance from the insurance company that the information they are given will ONLY be used to make an initial contact to ask wether as members of the WTA they are interested in an exclusive WTA insurance review.
If they say yes then it goes from there ,if they decline then no more contact.
With insurance its a numbers game so we need to help them access as many members as possible.I think an opt out is the way to go,we put Georges post up in the WTA members forum but add a line similar to “week commencing contact will be made by an operative regarding exclusive WTA Insurance benefits” if you do not wish to be contacted please let George know by (Date) and he will ensure that you are not contacted,If anyone then complains we can say “well it was in the forum”
The problem with an opt in is that if very few people look in the forum and opt in we cant get the deals that people will want.
We will also have people complaining that they have missed out cos they didn’t know.
With regard to the WTA operative ,that can be worked on,The insurance company have created a bespoke WTA insurance scheme,so thats where the reference comes from.

Sending unsolicited mail/email etc. is an offence under the DPA unless you made it clear some of the information gleaned from the application form used to set up the members details would/could be used for marketing purposes.
I for one, do not recall providing my consent to my membership information being used in such away and I will require evidence my application for membership carries my consent for you to
a) market me with such literature; and or
b) release my information to any third party without my advanced written consent.Be careful where you take this!

Thanks for pointing that out Carl
Ok everyone ,I wonder what would be an appropriate way to do this then ?
Is it as Barrie said and do an opt in through the forums that way people are consenting to contact rather than consenting by default ?(if that make sense)or is there another way ?April 3, 2013 at 7:08 pm #392880Allsorts
ParticipantRe: WTA Insurances
Thanks for that input Carl… Do you think the same would be the case if the email came direct from Whitegoods Trade Association?
Do you have any suggestions?
Lawrence, can we have Marketing Consents written into the constitution on the next re-write?

The WTA can send the email or a newsletter, much like Ken does with UKW, that’s not a problem.
The WTA CANNOT release to any other party ANY details regarding a members membership without the prior consent of the member, unless required under an act or statute of law. Once consent is obtained then its fine to release it.
It matters not whether the information via the third party comes by email, letter, newsletter, telephone call or any other way.

Sorry, writing a consent into a revision of the constitution won’t work.
Its the application for membership form that needs to be amended.

This is the sort of feedback we need.. Thx Carl.
Do you have any suggestions about how to go forward.. Or is it a case of a letter from ‘WTA to all members?.

What if we initially PM all members to request permission .. Then, we write to the ones that don’t answer via PM?

Good luck with that!
TBH, the best that you can do is either write to or call all the members and half you will struggle to get hold of I would imagine. If you start out thinking that apathy is the greatest motivation ever shown in this industry you won’t be far off the mark.
