Our 6 yr old SGS46E02GB Bosch Exxcel Dishwasher started to have the check water light come on the during pump out parts of a wash cycle and the dishes were not being cleaned that well.

When it started to display check water at the start of a wash cycle, I put hot water in a few times and after a couple of jugs/pump out cycles, it would complete the initial pump out without the check water light coming on and would go through the cycle fine. This may have been a red herring though. It has been spending a longer time than before doing the initial pump out as it stays pumping out when all the water has gone.

So armed with trusty screwdriver and torch plus reading a few things I decided it was time to get intimate. There is no water in the base, very dry so that’s good, water in pipes is free flowing, inlet matrix is clear, float chamber is dirty but is not clogged and moves fine. Pump impeller is clean and moves fine too.

So I switched it on and watched it go through a few rinse cycles. It starts pump out and as such water is pumped out quickly but pump remains going after the water has been pumped out for a while and check water light comes on. As if it gets bored with that, it stops pump out, water inlet solenoid activates and fill starts with the check water light now off. I note that compared to an old Neff the water used to fill until the float chamber filled and that was the cut off but not with this model. I am not convinced there is enough water going in at the moment which would explain the lack of decent washing. Anyway it went through a number of cycles and then suddenly started to run fine, pump out was shorter, seemed to stop shortly after water had pumped out and no check water light came on.

Foolishly optimistic I put it back together and ran a full dish wash cycle at 65 degrees with the machine empty. It started fine but mid way through the cycle the check water light came on when pumping out, and lo it was trying to pump out water that was not there again and after a bit continued the cycle with the check water light going out.

We tried it again with the machine full and it started ok but check water came on again and the the dishes were not cleaned at all well. e.g they all had to be hand washed afterwards.

I have had a search for these symptoms but could not find anything that completely matched but the jug impeller seems to be mentioned a lot. Would that be worth a go at replacing? Why would that be causing a pump out issue?. Or is there something more fundamental I am missing.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Cor blimey guv, I thought this was a condensed version of Tolstoy’s War & Peace?

Get out your “trusty screwdriver” and replace THIS 😀

    Cheers Martin, have ordered that.

I figured better war and peace for all information was better than the “it don’t work what should I do” 😉

Trusty screwdriver and book of handy swear words on standby for fitting time. Will post back what happens.

Oh dear, replaced the impeller jug as advised and no change. I still get the check water light on during pump out until it gives up and carries on with the next part of the cycle. It is filing with water and pumping out fine but keeps trying to pump out when there is no water left to pump out when the light comes on. Dishes still dirty too.
Any suggestions for the next plan of action?
    Thanks.

Did you get round to cleaning out that float chamber in the end or is it still dirty?

    Hello Martin,
Sorry I should have said, I cleaned it even though it was pretty minor staining in the end, no crud and that is working lovely.
Initial fill goes well, float rises and triggers micro switch to start pump out, water is pumped out fine but then stays pumping out up to a minute more with check water light coming on during that time. Then it stops, fill starts and completes, and cycle starts.
Each pump out sequence the same thing happens. I did threaten it Basil Fawlty style but it did not listen. It’s branch time for it next at this rate. ;o)
    Cheers.

That should NOT happen. Whilst it is filling the circulating pump should fire up and continue to fill. So either the transfer pipe between the float chamber and sump is blocked or the circ. pump isn’t firing up when it should. Or the water diverter in the heater unit is jammed not allowing the circl pump to distribute the water through the spray arms…..???

I’d be looking closely at the pressure chamber, may look clean but I’ve replaced loads of these for similar faults
